Anyone got ArcGIS 9.0 or IDRISI on their computers?

Ok i have a new request.

Can somone tell me the steps i would go through in ArcGIS to produce a map showing a buffer zone that should be the first priority for emergency services? Its a zone of those most at danger so they would be close to the river, maybe at a sloping elevation and maybe with poor drainage.

I have to produce a flow diagram of the steps i would take im GIS, not too detailed, no specifics just general steps and the tools used. Im thinking Map of perth --> overlay with elevation map --> overlay with drainage map --> ... i dont know lol. Help.

Does that stuff come with ArcGIS 9? I thought it just came with a generic world map.

I dont know apparently ArcGIS can do everything, they can apparently tell whether the manholes on the road are of the square or circular type so its not too far fetched it can do elevation too.

Heh, well you need the data first. I use ArcGIS constantly every day at work. Yes, it can do amazing things, but you need the data. Most of that man-hole data comes from imagery that has to be orthorectified. It's then manually extracted (people sit and pan around the imagery looking for them, then they place them in a geodatabase). It would be possible to put a nice map together if you had some elevation data for Perth and some good imagery.

Makes sense, i have no data. I was under the impression Arc could retrieve the relevant data itsself, or through using this digimap thing.

Turns out noone else has an actual GIS map in their report so i dont think its needed anyways.

Well, there may be some kind of data service that would have that, and you could set Arc up to access it. I'm not familiar with it though. Edit: I'm not having any luck finding any free data online. Some cities publish GIS data, but I can't find any for Scotland.

I have access to about 200 computers with ArcGIS. I don't really know much about it though.

What do you do? If you're in the geospatial field, it's probably worth learning. We have a hard time finding people who really know ArcGIS.

There is a concentric ring tool within arcgis, which allows you to create a buffer polygon to a specified radius.

i actually have no idea what you are trying to do.... wooooooo

If I understand you correctly, here's what I'd do:

Layer 1: Map of Perth
Layer 2: Drainage map
Layer 3: Road map with road types (paved, one way, dirt, etc)
Layer 4: Parcel map
Layer 5: Population density map
Layer 6: Overlay with a classified elevation map (This would be split out like temperature maps on the weather. 0-2 meters above normal river level would be one group, then 2-4, 4-6, etc)

You could run a query with layers 5 and 6 to see which areas have the most people that are the most prone to flood.

Just an idea.

Edit: My free trial of ArcGIS 9 doesn't seem to want to install in Vista. I need to buy a copy of it, but it's very expensive.

I did this exact same thing in a lab once, though it was more of an accurate flood prediciton map.

From reading your posts, it seems like you are just beginning with arcgis.... is this an independant project? because it seems like an advanced topic for a beginner.

It's pretty basic. You just need the pixels of the elevation raster that are within certain elevations above the river's normal level.

Yeah, the great thing about Arc is that it's so huge, and the bad thing about Arc is that it's so *huge*. Intimidating, too. The first time someone sat me down infront of ArcGIS 8.3 and told me to connect to a database and add in layers I started to wonder what I had gotten myself into.

I don't do anything related to EMS services, so take what I post with a grain of salt. I don't know exactly how useful my idea up above will be, but I know that a lot of people that I work with did stuff like this during Hurricane Katrina (I live in ground-zero) when they were in college. I didn't do any of that stuff and I kind of wish I had.

Here is a screenshot of the online GIS data for my hometown (Biloxi, MS). That's my old house from 10 years ago. This might give you some ideas. You can see the contour running right infront of my house there.

Biggest problem with GIS is always data. I won't get into the crappiness of ESRI product (enterprise my ass). Getting the data is most of the battle.

Nice. We use Geoportalmaps.com to access aerial imagery for the few counties up here in North MS that use it. Hopefully, the other counties will get on board. It's frustrating to have to use aerial imagery or USGS quads that are several years old.
