I got a pretty good offer from a guy on this model. I've looked at Anandtech's initial review on the reference model. The noise after overclocking is pretty high up there, close to 290X reference.

I just wonder what the real world experiences of this is? Just how "bad" is it so to speak? Wrong section of the forum to ask about additional experiences about the 290X ref, I guess, but that would also be helpful.

I thought about custom cooling, but wouldn't that void warranty? It's an MSI reference model.

Unless he is giving you $100 off or you are gaming with headphones on or you are not sensitive to loud videocards, can you live with this?

Watch the whole video:
http://www.computerbase.de/videos/2015-06/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti-lautstaerke/

Not only is the reference 980Ti loud as heck but they generally top out at 1380-1400mhz overclock vs. 1475-1525mhz for after-market versions. On top of that at < 60C the fans don't stop spinning either so the card is louder in 2D and light 3D gaming compared to after-market versions.

Also, MSI voids warranty for any alterations/mods to their cards:

Warranty Exclusions
The following circumstances excluded from warranty coverage

Product damage caused by catastrophes, thunder stroke, faulty electric power and environmental factors.
Defacing of product labeling (label alterations and falsifying, serial number missing, serial number no longer discernible, serial number invalid). All serial numbers are recorded and tracked for warranty purposes
Unauthorized changes of non MSI parts, modifications or alterations , parts removal in or to the products
Damage caused by operator error or operator fails to comply user manual instruction, such as, but not limited to improper storage resulting in product get wet, corrosion, fell off, squeezed or exposed to inadequate temperature/humid environment.
Internal or external consumable items of the product itself such as battery, earphone, etc
Accessories or packing material such as boxes, user manual ,etc.

Considering you can get a Zotac AMP! with an awesome cooler and Metal Gear Solid V that you can probably sell for $20-25, I think he needs to be giving a big discount to make it worthwhile to buy a used reference 980Ti.

I have a 980ti reference and have/had 290x reference (now under water) from personal experience the sound the 980ti makes under load is nowhere near as bad as the 290x reference. Its certainly not as good as custom cooled but I find it tolerable. Mine is overclocked and sustains boost @ 1450mhz with about 55% fan speed with temp target of 86C.

I have a straight Nvidia brand reference model. I never used the factory cooler and slapped an EK waterblock on it the day it came in. With a moderate voltage boost I hit 1545MHz max clock. Max load temp is 40C (actually, 38C but I'm not counting out that the right game could push it to 40C).

I can vouch for this. I had a 290x Ref (two of em) and then 2 days later a 980 Ti. I did suicide runs 290x vs 290x CFX vs 980 Ti all at 100% fan load, and a single 290X was far more audible than the 980 Ti.

The 290x blower was definitely moving more air, and that is the sound you'd hear.

I run my 980 Ti Ref @ +200/+200 for gaming, and a custom fan profile. Fan ramps up to 60% frequently to keep temps at ~70C (which is too hot for my liking waiting on a water bracket). Card is audible over my case fans, but not terribly. Stock fan profile card is idling in the 40C and is inaudible (at least in my situation). Custom fan profile to keep temps ~30C when idle, fan is at 40%, not audible over case fans.

I'm not advocating running the 980 Ti 100% fan, but normal use I would say it is no worse than my HD 7970 Ref or hell, that pesky GTX 680 I was using recently - that was probably more annoying.

290X ref blower is a completely different ball park::

Granted, you aren't sitting staring at the fan, I just picked a video to match the one RS picked (which is equally absurd to demonstrate fan noise).
