Not a fan of pit bulls personally. I would look at any other bulldog besides them.

If you decide to get one, be sure to take obedience classes with him/her.

Actually naming my dog "Turkleton" if you are a fan of scrubs.

Two friends of mine each have Siamese. They act like dogs. They play fetch, they walk on a leash, they come when called, they both perform various tricks. IME cats are much better suited for apartments than are dogs. If you get the right cat (like a Siamese), they'll be happy to hang out with you when you're home but won't go crazy with loneliness when you're not.

I have another friend with a Maine my excellent compatriot, which is also quite affectionate but not quite as doggish as the Siamese. The cat basically does nothing but hang out near its owner (which is basically what my friend does, haha).

I have a different perspective than most people when it comes to "good apartment dogs".

Most people suggest little dogs. The problem with that is that most little dogs are also the most likely to bark/yip incesently. As a dog owner one of my single biggest "pet" peaves is dogs barking non stop. If you are a homeowner it's not as much of a problem, but in an apartment setting it's a huge concern. Terriers tend to bark. A LOT. As a neighbor I would wish death on you (or your dog) if that thing yapped all freaking day long.

I personally have a rhodesian ridgeback and it exhibits two traits that would make it an excellent apartment dog.

1) It's the quietest dog I have ever known. The only time this dog barks is when I get her to do it when we are roughhousing. Otherwise she is silent.

2) It sleeps 20 hours a day. She's a living peice of furniture She gets a couple mile walk/run in each day with my wife and I and after that she just goes and plops down for the night.

I guess really what I'm trying to say here is that size isn't really the only consideration. You just have to get your dog out for a walk/play time outside. But every breed needs that.

I also echo the sentiments waning about a puppy - it is a HUGE undertaking. The first few months they will need to be let out every hour or so since they have very little control over their functions. They will also resort to destructive habits if they are unattended during the day.

Understand the responsibility you are taking on. If you don't have a roommate or S/O that can help care for the dog you may be in for a very frustrating year or two.

I never cared for Pit bulls until recently. My GFs roommate has one, and she is about the sweetest dog in the world. All she wants to do is cuddle and sleep. Of course, you'd have to get one as a puppy to make sure you brought it up the right way.

that ridgeback is cool, just might be too big. Depends on where i end up living i suppose.

You don't want a strong willed "fighting" breed as your first dog. You really need to know what you are doing to put up with one of those stubborn dominate breeds or it will end up at the pound just like all those pit bulls. There is a reason there are a bunch of them there. I'd throw out crazy hyper terriers as well. Something easy going along the lines of a retriever are good first dogs.
