I have exhausted Compaq support on this one, and since this is the best forum in the world, I thought I would post here. Heres the deal:
I have a Compaq Presario 1600s laptop. My father gave it to me. It is out of warranty. The thing had so much crap loaded on it (from dad AND compaq) that I wanted to clean sweep the Hard Drive and install my own fresh Win 98 SE (which was the origional OS). I had the Quick Restore CD which, according to Compaq, had the drivers on it. So I:
Deleted all partitions using Fdisk in dos.
Created a primary partition using all free space on HDD.
Formatted new partition after reboot with Format in dos.
Installed windows.
Inserted the Compaq Quick Restore CD and began looking for drivers.
*ZILCH*
Turns out the quick restore CD doesn't have anything on it but some .bat files which tells the computer to look at the hidden D: partition on the computer (which I deleted) and get the stuff from there. Apparently, the D: partition contains an image of the factory installation, (which I don't want, but at this point would be better that nothin')
I could find some of the drivers on Compaq's website but not all.
Have no way of knowing what componetry is in the computer because at compaq's site they have a configuration search and I put my computers serial in and it said the as-sold configuration could not be found. I guess they drop the serial after the warranty runs out or something.
SO:
I need at bare minimum the audio drivers. But it would also be nice to get the drivers for all the specialty buttons.
PS This is my first post on this forum so please excuse any newbie errors. (I will welcome constructive criticism!)
