Anyone have a GPU that prevents power on?

I have a rig for my kid with a 3570k and a gigabyte board that powered down a few days ago and wouldnt power back on.

After changing the power supply from a 750 seasonic gold to an 850w seasonic gold it still didnt work so i started removing things one by one and finally found that the system wouldnt boot at all with his 980ti installed. I removed it and tossed in an old 650 and it took off running fine.

I am leaning towards it being the card thats bad, but ive never seen a gpu prevent a power on before, i mean no lights no fans, nothing except a quick blip of a fan light and then nothing.

While im waiting on gigabyte to get with me, has anyone else seen this?

The card may be drawing too much power and causing the PSU to protect itself and the board by instantly shutting down.

So the 980 Ti has been working before?
You can try starting it without the PCI-E cable connected, it should at least start but will display that you need to plug in the PCI-E cable.

Otherwise, it's most certainly a dead card.

It was working fine and the system shut down overnight.

The power supply has been replaced also, it was a 750w seasonic and was replaced by an 850w with no change. Other than ram and 2 SSD there is really nothing else connected to the system.

I had the exact thing with a r290, when I took it apart I found burnt/disintigrated components in the power deliver side of the board. Sry your card is probably dead.

Sounds like a bad GPU.

Out of curiosity, why are you running such a large PSU? High wattage PSU's like that are very inefficient when not being run under load.

Seems like a broken GPU, thing is most of these cases its usually only 1 capacitor that is blown and prevents the whole card from working, if you knew your stuff around electronics it would be an easy fix.

I've had a mobo that had a blew capacitor and an electrician fixed it.

I had the same issue on an AM3+ board using an Asus HD 7850 card. I swapped an older card in and the pc worked fine.
I swapped the 7850 into an older tower and that booted fine with the card. Bringing it back over to the newer tower resulted in the quarter second shut down again. So i knew i had a working PSU, a working mobo, a working card.

I ended up taking the whole tower apart, reinstalling just the card, no hard drives and everything booted fine into the bios. after that I installed all the peripherals and it still worked fine. Ran Left 4 dead 2, the witcher 3, and the sims 4 just fine.

Still not entirely sure if the PSU is going bad, or the mobo is going bad.

Yeah I ended up sending it back for an RMA when i tested it out in another system.

The reason I run a higher watt PSU is I have more than just a single GPU typically and lots of lighting and fans. Plus i would rather be a bit inefficient and have some room to grow and add more devices.

Ah, ok.

Check the PCIe pins on the card, had this happen to me and a metal filing/piece of debris had gotton wedged somehow into the PCIe slot and stuck to the cards PCIe pins shorting 3 together.

Thank you very much to everyone that commented. This is now in Gigabytes hands, lets see how they handle it.

Yes ! I just had this happen. Its like an old VGA/DVI card with no fan, small heatsink. I don't know the number because it would not boot, but its Nvidia something. I put a GTX9800+ in it (yes another dinosaur) and it did boot. Ryzen 1950X on X399 Taichi.

Sorry for the late update, but this in fact was the issue. Chalk that up to my first time in 20+ years having that happen.

Gigabyte fixed the problem pretty quick, though their communication could use some improvement.
