Membership is up at the end of the month at my gym. Cheapest rates I've found are $50 a month for my wife and I. I'm thinking of getting my own equipment. What kind of equipment do you have and recommend? I know for sure I'll need a squat rack. Not sure what I can do for bench as its pretty dangerous doing bench by yourself.

In my case, I converted the shed. Four 4'x6'x3/4" horse stall mats for the floor, plus a sheet of 4x8 plywood underneath the rack itself. Rack is 4x4 posts, 2x4 connecting members at the top, 2x6 for the base. The whole thing connects into the center beam of the shed, so it's rock solid. Cost for all that was about $300, a lot of it being the mats.

Drilled out eight holes - a pair for J-hooks in bench position, a pair for J-hooks at shoulder height, and a quartet to run metal pipes through for rails. If I drop the weight on the rails, it'll destroy them, but the idea is not to drop it, but set it down. I can get out from under a bench press by sliding sideways off the bench. No worries at all.

As for equipment, Pendlay Econ bumpers, 410 lbs, another 20 lbs in smaller plates, The Rogue Bar, and the Rogue bench. That's where I spent the money.

1. Yoga mat
2. Gym Boss interval timer
3. Resistance bands
4. Jump rope

If you have the space and have proven that you can stick to a workout schedule
1. Pull up frame not the doorway crap
2. Recumbent bike or elliptical
3. Bench and adjustable free weights

I amassed a pretty decent collection of weights and equipment during the first year after I committed to exercising again. After a while my lack of space for a good power rack bothered me more and more and eventually I just joined a gym. I still use my home weights on occasion when I miss a gym workout for whatever reason, but mostly they gather dust.

My home gym consists of:

one old wieder bench that is a bit rickety, but does the job for light bench pressing

one newer adjustable-back bench minus weight rack that I use for flies, flat dumbell presses, incline dumbell presses, incline curls, etc.

One one inch barbell good for light bench pressing, straight bar curls, shoulder presses, light front-squatting, lunges, rows, etc.

one set of dumbell handles

EZ curl bar

~350 total pounds of weights designed to fit my one inch barbell, ez curl, and dumbell handles

One iron gym doorway mounted pullup/pushup bar.

One cheap gold's gym elliptical machine.

The main things that I'm lacking are olympic bars/weights, and a squat rack, but if push comes to shove I can put in a solid workout at home.

I have a heavy bag ... I used it a lot when I had it hung up, but I took it down since I was putting a ceiling in the room where it was ... still haven't put it up in it's new home, however, there is now a floor where it will be

agreed. i never do bench at home. i'll only do bench at my friend's gym where i can get a spot.

I have a Prospot P500 machine. Never a need for a spotter.

I also have a set of Bowflex Selectech dumbbells, a vertical leg press a back row machine and a free weight bar with a bunch of plates.

Damn, that looks pretty nice. It doesn't feel cramped having it in the room you have it in? Looks a little tight, but it could just be the picture.

I'm jealous, I hate waiting to use a squat rack or powercage cause someone decides they want to do curls, or stretch. Sigh.

Coscto 24 hour fitness 2 year membership = $299.99 = $12.50/month.

Supposedly you can do it 4x per person, so 8 years of $12.50/month membership is a good price.

Nah its not too bad the pic might make it look a bit small, its 12x12. I have enough room to deadlift, power clean, press, in front of the cage. I am going to get a dip attachment for it soon I think. There are cheaper racks but this one is very solid and makes me feel safe
