These degrees were irrelevant to my current career.

I've got a BS, MS, and PhD in EE. I work in exactly the same field as what I studied in for my MS and PhD work. I "compete" in gubment agency programs with my former lab mates and my research advisor.

Fun, satisfying work, and the pay is more than adequate. The people sort of suck, and I'm working on new employment... which is sort of sad, I guess, given how much I like what I do.

I work more than full time.

I have a few buddies I did my undergrad with (Engineering) that went on to law school. They all got through and are working as Jr attorney's now. Half of them actually enjoy it, the other half don't. Sure it's a lot of money income-wise, but the amount they work and the amount of loans they have is a huge buzz kill. I'm glad I just stuck with engineering and went to work right away - I enjoy playing with electricity and seeing projects be completed rather than paperwork/meetings/etc. To each his own, I suppose. The half who don't enjoy it are pretty jealous of the rest of us who just settled for the engineering jobs and have worked our way to pretty good pay. We also leave the office at 4PM or so and half a life outside of work. Meanwhile their noses are still in the books..... D:

Yes I have a degree. It's of questionable value apart from its ability to prevent you from getting knocked out at the very first job candidate screens by potential employers. I guess employers think it means you have perseverance to toil away for a few years for the minimal payoff of an entry level professional job.

Yes, working full time. My "field" was business so I guess so. As far as living well, sure but it really had nothing to do with having a degree but rather some luck, lots of diligence, and flexibility. Worked my way through college as an Army night school student borrowing college text books from the post library and largely self-taught and tested out of whatever classes I could between deployments (which was typically 8-10 months a year). I don't have the native intelligence of most traditional college students so I've literally needed to outwork my peer competition during my entire career and let my work product speak for me rather than a fancy college name on my resume. After leaving the Army I started in a bank call center making diddly over squat; and have since worked my way up to an Enterprise Architect role making fairly reasonable money. It ain't Donald Trump kinda of money, but I certainly no longer need to worry about whether I can afford to buy the full gallon jug of milk rather than the quart when I go grocery shopping.

Older self never needs defending. You can get away with anything if your old. Start a five car pile up? "oh he's just old". Poop your pants in Walmart and shake it down your pants leg? "oh he's just old". You can go around yelling swear words out the window while driving on the sidewalk against a one lane road and the most they'll do is give you a happy shot and sit you down in your easy rocker.
