If you have this drive or any of the Special Edition WD drives what do you think of it. How is it?

I'm ordering one this week ... It seems to be the best performing IDE hard drives to date! ..... (all the WD's with 8mb cache)

I'm going to be getting mine from Newegg.com $125 (free shipping)

All reviews on this drive have been positive all the way as far as i know it ...

I'm seriously considering buying one of these, but a couple of people have said WD drives aren't so reliable as seagates or maxtors. Also, the seagate barracuda is supposed to be MUCH quieter than the western digital...but obviously it's not as fast.

Dear oh dear - why is choosing hard drives so difficult?

I've got a WD 120GB 8MB SE harddrive and it's virtually silent.

I have two 100gb WD Special Edition drives, both in ASUS P4B266-C boards, both with P4 1.6a CPUs, one running at 133 FSB and the other at 140 FSB, and neither have given the slightest problem.

StorageReview.com has reviews of the 80GB and the 120GB drive.

Do a search on this forum. There is a similar thread just about every day it seems.

I have the drive and could not be happier.

My WD1200JB is pretty much silent, feels just as fast as my dad's Maxtor Atlas 10k-III (a 10,000 RPM SCSI drive), and has 120 gigs of storage. It also runs very cool - MUCH cooler than my old SCSI drive (a WD 10,000 rpm SCSI drive...) which sounded like someone was blending frozen strawberries during seeks. So far, I'm very satisfied with the drive for the most part; I really have nothing negative to say about it.

Personally my opinion is that SCSI is a big, big waste of $$$ for the vast majority of people out there. Don't buy into the hype, cause that's all it is.

I have the 800JB . Its fast, very fast. I get great benches as well.

Sandra 26800

Winbench 2.0
Transfer rates
Outer 49000
Inner 29200
Access time 13.6
Business 8690 * I had stuff running in the background though.
High End 29100
Its very speedy and almost completely silent. I have the case open and you can not hear it unless put your ear right up on it. Everything opens quick and snappy. Got it on a new KX7333 as one large partition in 2K. Its a great drive . It lives up to the hype.

about the reliability of WD.....my bro had a problem with one, and then sent him like an overnight or 2day rma, brand new, and it works flawlessly. Their tech support was great for him, and we also have one in our home rig (an 'older' 40gig model) and it is quiet and fast

Just contacted Dell to get replacement for my WD1200JB drive. Has a very noticable whine just running (no access) that drowns out the fans and can be heard from out in the hall. So some of the "noisy" reports may have come from ones like this one. I checked the StorageReview report and they also said drive was very quiet and couldn't be heard above the other system noise.

I just got my 80GB special edition HDD today. I replaced my totally silent(but not that fast)Seagate 40GB Baracuda IV. This drive is fast! My ears are very sensative so the smallest amount of noise coming from my computer will drive me crazy. I thought that this thing would be too loud but I took a chance on it. I'm glad to say that this drive is also wisper quiet, but not as quiet as the Seagate drive. But, considering that the Seagate drive made NO noise, anything coming from the Western Digital drive would make it louder than the Seagate. If you are looking into getting the WD SE drive don't hesitate, it's worth it.

I know that my JB is dead silent for the most part, and the ONLY fans in my system are on my Enermax PS (which is pretty quiet) and an 80mm low speed fan on the CPU. I can only hear it during seeks, and even then it's very quiet.

There is no way I could hear it from my hallway - I'd have a hard time hearing my computer from the hallway, let alone the HD. If I were you, I'd consider contacting dell again to see if they'll be *really* nice and give you another one, since that one's clearly bunk.

I have that drive. It's really nice. Very speedy and quiet.
I don't know about overclocking, I'm in no position to do that just yet.
