anyone have an rs/6000?

i'm thinking about getting one from ebay. the older ones with the ppc601 processor can be had for $15. how difficult is it to install netbsd or linux?

Have one at my old job and a Tandem machine. The RS6000 we had was not for home use. You could buy 2 of my houses with how much it cost.

they are not easy to deal with. the hardware is totally different than a PC, so U'll feel dumb dealing with it, and to get linux on them usually takes a geat deal of trouble (kernel modding) unless its fairly new.... but the new ones are at least $20000.....

it depends on the model. Actually the PPC based units are very much like PC hardware. same drives, same memory chips, etc, depending on how old it is. I was in the Rochester Minn. plant where we make these units about 4 years ago, and I was amazed at how similar the work station units looked inside to a PC. I am certain that there are linux ports for this processor from suse and Turbolinux. I can see the ISO's on the IBM internal linux FTP server. What do you get for your $15?? any memmory or hard drive?

well, $15 gets you nothing but the machine itself (or so it looks like). i have several scsi and ide harddrives around. what kind of memory do these things use?
