more specifically with the cpu socket mounting lever that places the cpu in place?

when i put the cpu in mine, soon as i start to lower the lever, there is tension on the hinge of the lever. but without a cpu, when i lower the lever, there is no tension on the hinge.

so whats wrong? i have all the pins aligned on the socket with the cpu. is it my particular cpu? its a thunderbird 1.4ghz 266.

Look into the pinholes with the CPU removed, and see what is happening as you open and close the lever... it pushes sideways on the pins so they get solid electrical contact. It's supposed to be under tension, I think you are ok.

I had this exact same problem. I had to push it a little harder than I like but eventually it went. I thought I was going to snap the lever but it worked.

BE CAREFUL!!!
I broke one A7N8X dx pressing hard to try to make it close. I think there may be some defective units around, cause I got another board and fitted the processor without problems.
I tried to fix it, but the board appears to be defective anyway, and when I determined that, I had messed with it so much I coudn't get it returned.
So if I were you, if it doesn't close with a reasonable force, try to return it.

It was my first time putting a processor in ANY mobo and it seemed a little too much force was needed to snap the lever back down on the A7N8X Dlx. But it is running fine so I just thought it was supposed to be that way. If i had read this post before I installed I probably would have returned board to be safe...

Well, of course if you've never installed a CPU, it's hard to tell how much force is too much force . I found the lever on the A7N8X quite hard compared with other boards I've used, but based on my experience with the first A7N8X, I know that there are some (well, I only know of one ) units with an extra-hard lever that are defective. If you doesn't move the processor when pushing the lever, and the "north" side of the socket starts to bend, then stop pressing.

yeah first time around, it broke with my tbird 1400 so i RMAed it to newegg. then the same tension happened so i thought it was my cpu so i got a new one. then i was too nervous coz of the tension, so i had a friend do it for me. it worked without breaking this time although he even said there was more tension than there should be
