Anyone have AT&T DSL?

Is it absolutely necessary to run their install disc to setup? I got the modem package and there is no PPPoE username password.

I have DSL through centurytel now, and they gave me a username/password which I plugged into my router to log me onto the DSL network.

I called AT&T and they said I had to run the setup disc to get the username/password.

So is this going to setup a 'software' logon? Can I just uninstall whatever it installs after I get the password and do it like I am doing it now.

I really don't want a bunch of useless stuff running on my computer

Thanks!

Do the setup to get your username/password. Put that info into your router. Uninstall the AT&T software.

That's what I did.

I used to have them. Call tech support not customer service, tell them you have linux. They'll give it to you.

This is why I like cable modem....hookup it up and no software installs.

However I hate Time Warner with a passion.

No, you don't have to use the setup disk, but it's not bad, and it works, as long as you bypass any of the extra crap, like the Yahoo toolbar, etc.

I did it manually, and AT&T's tech support guided me through a couple of problems on the phone, but it ended up doing exactly the same thing as the setup disk.

i've had it for 6 months. It's about $10 less a month for the same speed. Less reliable though.

that's what I did too. If your modem ever gets deactivated you are going to have go through the whole setup process again though.

Your modem shouldn't be deactivated. All you basically need is your PPPoE ID and password to enter into the 2Wire.

Just hook up your modem and browse to 192.168.1.254 (Web Interface for your Modem). Enter the credentials they gave you on the card (your password is your 10 digit phone number) and you're set.

i managed to do it without installing crap, and i'm not using their cruddy 2wire integrated modem/router thing.

way better than cable out here, which cuts out for the whole neighborhood in the afternoon. cable doesn't even provide a decent tv signal.

I didn't get a 'card' with any information on it.

Its very easy to use their internet without installling the software. Go to network connections and click on create a new connection.

Then pick

-Connect to the Internet
-Set up my connection manually
-Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password
-make up ISP name

Call SBC 1-888-322-5274 Most direct line to call to set up your DSL

Ask them for your username and password.

Then you're set.

Well I hope that what I signed up for from the link above didn't mess anything up. I guess, I'll find out Monday. I 'think' the online thing gave me the user/name and password. I followed the link that FrankSaucedo gave above and 'signed' up and it 'seems' like it worked.

I'm not on it yet, I'm moving a couple hundred miles on Monday. Won't know till Tuesday evening.

I have had it for years and stick with it even though cable is faster. Why? Well because it is rock solid and I never have down time.
