I had their Xtreme 6.0 service. Which I rarely got 6mbps. Most like 4-5 on a good day. As low as 2.5mbps during high traffic times.

I recently switched to the Xtreme service, which is 3.0mbps. The reason was they are offering bundles for Internet, phone and TV which ended up being almost the same as the Internet(6.0) and Phone we already had.

Went to speedtest.net and well....

AT&T? Not anymore, thank god. Try a few different speedtest sites, if you get consistently poor performance, I would have them come out and work on the lines. If you can't get the performance you are paying for, then time to switch...

My problem is I'm in a very rural town. And I'm outside the city limits too. It's AT&T or the even worse Hughes Net!!! THAT'S IT!

I feel for you... it's a terrible situation to be in. Nevertheless, if you are getting that kind of performance on all the Speedtest locations, I would still call them and try to have a tech come out and fix your lines. Sometimes it's a dirty/wet line causing noise that is killing the speed, in this case it might be a simple as switching the telco cable pair with a "clean" pair already in your junction box or on the telephone pole.

Good luck.

I had the exact same experience as you with ATT. I had the EliteDSL Direct service (6 mpbs, no phone line). I put up with it as 3 mbps seemed to be fine for my needs at the time. Eventually I got fed up with connection (tried multiple modems, placed multiple service calls). $35/mo for 3 mpbps (advertised as 6 mpbs) is a rip off. Now with Comcast and a Docsis 3.0 modem, have not looked back since. Paying the same price and averaging 20 mbps down. Too bad you cannot get cable in your area.

I have always hated AT&T with a passion. The upload speed is even more retarded. I used to own a DSLR and uploading pics was a pain. I now have an S95, which still has larger files. Plus, HD video. I hardly ever upload HD video because it just takes forever! I still shoot in it though.

I'm on their U-verse now. If I wasn't planning to move soon I would go with WoW (Wide Open West) since they're still unmetered. I recommended a WoW bundle to my sister that's on AT&T's basic package. She's getting lower than you and there's nothing AT&T can do about until they dig up all the old lines in that area.

I worked for a call center that handled specific modems on AT&T DSL. Let me just say that working in a DSL tech support center shed light on the whole DSL situation and why it is such a bad technology. Crappy copper wiring, distance restrictions, and just the way the technology works in general is stupid. DSL was just a way for the phone companies to get in on the internet game.

What's probably happening is you're too far from your CO (central office) or RT (remote terminal). When this happens your line needs to be provisioned at a lower speed. In many cases I saw AT&T's provisioning department decrease the provisioned level of customers on a 1.5 mbit connection, down to just 384/384 kbits. 384/384 is a joke. This happens constantly in Rural areas.

I'm kinda aware of that. Yet, AT&T still promises higher speeds. And hypes the crap out of their DSL service. They even go as far as saying it's better than cable or even bashing cable. It's quite hilarious. lol

It's a line issue. I had a number of 6.0/384k (business) lines that were solid 6mbit all day long. Never wavered from that. Granted teh remote dslam was in my building and we were the only ones on it.

You guys are gonna flip when I find out if its OK to post my speedtest numbers at my new job.

Reboot the modem so it can resync properly... I switched to 6.0 and had to do it to get the right speeds.

Tell them to fix it or give you the 6mbps service to get 3mbps speed. AT&T (SBC) brought their crappy service to Bellsouth when they bought it several years ago. Landline phone problems? It only takes two weeks now to get a tech instead of two days. DSL problem you say? It must be that out of warranty netopia modem that Bellsouth sold you several years ago. We'll send you a new one for $90. There is a reason why AT&T wireless is rated the lowest cell phone company.

I've gone through 3 of those crappy netopia ones. Someone gave me an ActionTec dsl model for free. When the 3rd netopia died, I plugged in the ActionTec. Works great.

Oh do I hate AT&T.

Just found out the reason for this.

I added a bundle because the prices were really cheap right now. I would get phone internet and TV for the same price I'm paying for phone and internet alone.

So, yeah I order online. I downgrade to the 3.0 service which is fine with me. But, what actually was going on was it was downgrading me to 1.5 because that's all that is available now.

I was only grandfathered in with the 6.0.

Mostly because again, this is a rural area. People are slowing moving nearby and some people can't even get DSL at all.

So yeah, 1.5 is all I can get!! I'm wishing I had not went for the bundle now! 1.5mbps is unbearable!
