Excuse my ignorance, I haven't lived in an area where basements are required since I was 7 or so.....

What is with the "windows?"

Also, if your woman can yell at you to take the trash out or to do the dishes, it isn't a luxury cinema.

the windows won't be noticeable in a couple days when i finish up some acoustical panels so that is moot.

and my wife can't yell at me to take the trash out or do the dishes - she wants to watch more movies than i do. just finished playing killer instinct on xbox one for a couple hours right now though while she was sleeping. and we watched a movie tonight already, it was her choice!

only movie i've seen in the theater since i bought my house in 2012 is iron man 3. probably won't see another movie in the theater for a long long time.

The only home theater experiences I've ever seen that truly replicate a cinema level presentation start at $1M and go up from there. Seeing something like Gravity in 3D with Dolby ATMOS sound is simply something that is not reproducible in any HT setup that the general public would have access to.

Lots of movies look fine on a decent HT setup but there are probably a handful per year that if you're not seeing in a real theater you are missing out on.

This makes sense to me. I guess for people with kids it is a night out?

My chick never saw Gravity, and that is the movie I could think of that should be seen in theatres, so that's what I landed on.

Also since there is constant booze, I know I will be needing to drain at least once, and I hate missing parts of movies that I haven't seen already.

People with kids don't get nights out. They spend every night at home with the kids. At least that is how it is for me.

We are able to go to a movie maybe a couple of times per year.

Wait the servers are out and about bringing food and drink, and taking orders, during the movie? That would be worse than being at a regular theater. Have everyone served prior to the movie starting.

There is one in Texas called Santikos, a private theatre group. They have one they built near my house called Paladium, and I swear the thing is ginormous. Santikos Palladium AVX Entertainment

Overall, I enjoy the experience, the food quality and selection is great and Movies are quite cheap at 7.50 matinee and 10$ for a regular ticket.

It's setup so that it doesn't interrupt much. It's a better experience than a typical theater.

I usually go to the theater around here that's like that, and it's okay. Their seats aren't anything to rave over compared to the leather recliners back home (especially since those are only $6-8 per ticket compared to $11-15). I mostly do it because the "fancy seats" are usually balcony seating, which means almost any seat is decent.

Most people do order before the lights dim and most get their food before the movie starts. Also, keep in mind there are only 8-10 seats per row, so even if you are at the end, there are only a few people the server would go to and you do have a lot of legroom. It's not that big of a deal.

Same. hence why me and the wife make the most of it and pay for good quality seating and service.

That may be my favorite feature...I had never seen that until tonight when reserving the tickets. Same seating reservation system as an airline.....no worries about showing up early.

All the theaters in Hong Kong had reserved seating whether you bought online or at the box office. When I came back to the States and heard about theaters doing online ticket buying, I figured that was what they implemented it but was severely disappointed. I can't understand why they thought people would want to buy tickets online that did not reserve a specific seat, pay an extra fee, and pick them up in another line at the movie theater.

Took the wife to the one in Rancho. She loved it, made her feel a whole lot more special than just going down to the local Edwards. Pricey, but the experience is worth it imo.

I don't think they exist here, the normal ones are pricey enough as it is, there would be no market for the luxury ones.

Also most people can just watch the movie and then go eat or to a bar afterwards if they want beer. I wouldn't pay a premium for that.

Yeah, my house.

Most comfortable seat available.
Best food and beverage.
I can take a break whenever I want.
No loud assholes. No texting. No tripping over people.
No sticky mystery substances all over the mother fucking place.
I control the thermostat.
I control the volume.
Restrooms are clean.
No ads. No breaks or cuts. No dust on the film.
Only pay once for infinite tickets.

I fucking love luxury theaters.

even if you watch movies alone, these two statements are false.

If you're talking about Fandango, that's another thing altogether. I only use that for shows I know will fill up (like Marvel movies at 9 PM premiere) or if I have to see a show at one theater near me that actually sells out for the popular movies on the weekend. I only use it maybe two or three times a year, but it has a purpose. The Fandango line usually is empty as well since you just pop your card in the machine and your tickets spit out. It's really not that big of a deal.

Now, with Cinepolis you do reserve the seat when you buy the ticket. The AMC and ArcLight near me are the same way as well. These are premium theaters though.

Went once, to a large AMC dinner theater in Bridgewater, NJ. It was... ok. It's sort of the medieval times of cinema. The food is ok for cheap schlock, and the seats are wide and plush and very comfortable, with tons of leg room. If I went back that would probably be the main draw.

I've been to that same theater. Maybe we saw each other if you were watching The Dark Knight Rises or the second Hobbit movie. The food is on par with casual dining chains. And it's priced about the same as you'd expect from a casual dining chain. The seats are very comfortable, and I think Wilt Chamberlain would be happy with the leg room. I don't go to the movies often, but that's the theater that I'll always go to, and not just because it's the one that's closest to my house.

I only go to Cinetopias or IMAX now, but I also only go when I get a deal (like Groupon) that brings the cost down significantly. It's just so much more comfortable, and it seems (though I've no hard evidence) that it attracts a better overall clientele...more polite, etc.

Unfortunately a minor skirmish is currently going on with Cinetopia over their attempts to prohibit lawful carry, but most of us simply ignore their requests and refuse to spend money on concessions in protest.

Private property.

Cinetopia is frickin' awesome and the only way to see a movie. And by refusing to buy their fantastic nachos and frosty refreshment, you're only hurting yourself.

It was like that in Italy. Didn't realize it at first and sat anywhere but on your ticket its automatically assigned.

Honestly, the drinks aren't any more expensive than they would be at a bar.

Heh, yeah, they do have some good food, but it's too pricey anyway so it all makes a good package reason to not participate. I realize it's private property, and they can do what they want, hence the reason for the boycott (which is us doing what we want). It's all on the up and up, just unfortunate.

Annoying high school kids or spoiled drunk snobs.

How about a theater that has no people. That sounds perfect. I will take my living room couch any day of the week....twice on sunday.

This March it will be the tenth anniversary that the wife and I stopped going to the public theaters. We have been enjoying our home theater for a decade now. Until you try it (if you can afford to, that is), it will change your life. Even our first home theater had a presentation in sight and sound that easily surpassed most theaters in our state.

The ten foot wide 2.4 aspect acoustical screen was probably our best investment and has outlived projectors.
