I have to say that I'm just really really curious:

http://www.scooterdepot.us/moped-sc...egal-motor-bikes-sport-motorcycles-p-744.html

I almost want to buy one just to see just how bad it could possibly be. It looks great, is 250cc, and considering how simple and reliable 250cc bikes are like the Ninja 250, what kinds of things could go catastrophically wrong?

Anyone gotten one of these?

EDIT: There's a community dedicated to these cheapo Chinese bikes:

Thread is over a year old. Closing.

A Universal Japanese motorcycle? What is that exactly?

For $2000 I could get:

1. Used 2007 Ninja 250: http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/mcy/2947137505.html

2. Brand new DongFang DF250: http://www.scooterdepot.us/250cc-street-legal-motor-bikes-sport-motorcycles-p-744.html

It's too bad the Pre-2009 Ninja 250s all look like shit.

See my dilemma?

UJMs are 1970's-1980's japanese bikes...they all had very similar styling at the time. they are, generally speaking, very well built, very reliable, and with an abundant used parts market if you need anything.

that being said..i'd personally go with the ninja, of your two choices.

Looks like you'll be wasting $2k on a shit bike if you go the chinese route, resell it at a huge loss after putting money into it, and get a Ninja or other Japanese bike later. Skip the hassle of buying a crappy bike in the first place, you're wasting money and time even considering it.

Hell, not to mention that buying a used Ninja or whatever would likely retain most of its resale value, so you could turn around and sell it later if/when you decide to upgrade.

Whereas the other it sounds like you'd lose 1500 just by buying, the Ninja you could probably turn around and flip for exactly what you paid for it.

Those used Ninjas are absolutely bulletproof. Don't buy a trash bike when you can get something MUCH better for the same price.

Those chinese knockoff bikes are terrible. I've stopped and help people broken down on them many times... It's amazing how much stuff is made out of cast pot metal. I've seen broken shift linkages, broken handlebar mounts, seat mounts, etc

No way would I even consider one of those bikes. There is a Korean knock off of the SV650 which is supposed to be decent. Maybe look at one of those used but this bike I wouldn't touch even if it was free.

Hyosung GT650 is the Korean bike. It has gotten relatively favorable reviews from what I've read. I'm sure you could pick one up used for $2k.

I have no idea why anyone would buy one of these considered the price and availability of low millage used Japanese bikes. All joking aside, I wouldn't trust my life to Chinese quality control.

korean bikes are a big improvement over the china rolling bikes of death. Heard a story of a guy who jumped on the brakes and broke both the pedal and the hand pull at the same time. Imagine the fear...

apparently hyosung is very big in the offroad market, which i didn't know.

considering the ninja250 has been the same for god knows how many years (minus its recent update)...i have no idea why you wouldnt buy a highly desirable bike with a massive parts/supply base.

The Hyosung is a good bike. It would be a better choice though if parts weren't so hard to come by.
