It will be out-patient surgery if they do it laproscopically. It will most likely be the mesh and titanium staples procedure.

His surgeon should have thoroughly explained the surgical technique he is going to use to your friend, and what to expect after the surgery.
I asked him yesterday and he's very testy about relating stuff like this, very testy! He claims (and he will NOT respond to cross examination!) that he doesn't know WTF they're going to do, and evidently because they won't know until they get in there and see what they're dealing with. Obviously, they did some kind of scan(s). It all seems a bit hasty, I don't think he got 2nd opinion(s) (I told him he probably should, and he seemed to like the idea), he wants to get on with the whole thing, get it over with. I mentioned laproscopic surgery, mesh, he just doesn't know what they are going to do, refuses to talk about it. I probably will hear nothing until Thursday, 2 days after the procedure. if he doesn't call me I'll call him, I figure. He has a ride to and from the hospital, and this guy is going to help him to get back into his cabin/house.

I had an hernia when I was a kid an an appendectomy last month. No big deal either way. Just a little pain they give you meds for and you walk around like an old man for a week. After a week I pretty much back in business as I had no complications with either surgery.

It hurts like a bitch for a few days but after that it's fine. I had an inguinal hernia and had it repaired the old fashioned way ( single incision.)

After the surgery I was in the most pain because I had to piss very badly.

Getting in and out of bed hurts the worst. Other than that just take it easy for a week and after two weeks things should be pretty normal.

I puked for about 8 hours after my hernia surgery. Abdominal surgery + puking = fun timez. Other than that it was fine. I was jogging up stairs 2 days later. This guy sounds like he's fun...

Having to take a crap was fun after for day. And anyone trying to make me laugh was torture in a way. Forgot to mention those. But abdominal surgeries heal fast because they are in an area with LOTS of blood flow. As long as there is no complications he'll be fine fast.

I had it in high school. The pain is fairly bad, but it is easily manageable. I found the best combination to be vicodin + ibuprofren, it almost completely erased the pain. I was off my feet for a few days and laughing hurt for a week or so, but it's not as bad as he's thinking.

He calls me Tuesday evening, about 4 hours after he came to. He was home, was driven home. He was standing, feeling pretty OK, coherent, and we talked for nearly an hour.

The surgeon didn't tell him anything. He was told that they wouldn't know until they got in there. I don't know if they even took any scans, he didn't say so. They gave him an Rx for Vicodin (he said it was hydrocordone/acetameniphen), and I looked at the vicodin I got for some procedure and that's what it says. He said he filled the Rx on the way home! He was not yet in pain when I talked to him (I believe he'd taken one vicodin, the Rx saying one every 6 hours), didn't feel a thing on his back where they took out a ~3" "lipoma" and he didn't feel much in his belly yet. He said he'd call me last night but that didn't happen, so I called him and his answering machine was off and he wasn't answering the phone. I assume he's uncomfortable.

They hadn't yet told him anything, if and when they'd remove stitches, change bandages. He figured he'd call them next day (i.e. yesterday). I told him he should ask to have the surgeon call him and explain what happened, what he should do, what he could expect and hope for.

They told him before the operations that his blood pressure was remarkably low considering he was about to have these surgeries and he told them he'd turned his mind off the last couple of days, just didn't allow himself to get worked up about anything.

He was real nervous about pain because he'd had his wisdom teeth extracted some years ago (they were impacted) and the experience was excruciating. I had my wisdom teeth taken out, 2 at a time and it was nothing, but mine weren't impacted, it was something else entirely. I think I barely needed the Vicodin I had for it, if I took it at all.

They told him afterward they put in mesh, that's about all I know. It was done on Valentine's Day, and he asked them to make the incision in the shape of a heart! He had no idea if they complied with that request. He was going to eat a small meal (thin slice of pizza) and smoke a bowl.

Lake County? Like Kelseyville? I'm in Mendo, would offer to be an emergency contact for him but I'm traveling right now. There are lots of good folks in Lake though. I'm sure he can call his friends and be surprised to discover they are the kind of friends that will help out.

He's pretty down on Lake County wants to get the hell out. He says most of them are alcoholics or druggies, usually tipsie by 2PM. Hell, I don't know. Anyway he got a guy to take him there and bring him home, I figured he would. He meets people all the time, he's just loath to make fast friends there, I think he wants to make sure he moves on. He's a city boy, grew up in New Jersey, lived in L.A., Oakland.

He's in Lucerne (just outside it, actually), north shore.

Still haven't heard from him, I figure he'll call me one day soon, I won't press him. He cops attitudes, he's conflicted.

Lake is no place for a city lover, that's for sure. It is pretty trashy in most spots and very rural in others.

He is area code 707! I'm not sure how much he loves the city, but he's lived in them most of his life. He bought and fixed up a house in Oakland, did most of the work himself. This was during the housing boom and he refinanced, took the equity he'd garnered and bought the place in Lucerne. He began to feel unhappy in Oakland for various reasons and before the housing boom's crash got very far he unloaded the Oakland property, was pleased that for once he had some money and moved lock stock and barrel to his Lake County property with his two dogs. However, he's convinced it's no place for him. Selling his property without considerable upgrades isn't going to be easy, doing the work is his priority (again, he does most of this himself). The hernia's been his problem that's holding him back, so getting that fixed has been his priority lately. Hopefully, in a bit he'll be OK again. He wants now maybe to move to the Russian River area. He says there are a lot of hip people living there, he says there's not many in Lake County. He just wants to get the hell out, with a vengeance.
