just wondering if anyone of you had any personal experience with either Emory University or Washington University (in St. Louis), if so could you post generally what you thought. I have a big decision coming up and any insight would be greatly appreciated

Wash is probably the best Medical School in the world.
I believe they have numerous Nobel Lauriate (sp?) working there, and the average MAT of matriculating students is around a 37.

Father went to WashU. Great school. Top notch school. Sister got into their med program but didn't go.. Rather than do a 6 year program, she did a 7 year (UCR/UCLA). Friend goes to emory (or used to). He likes it there i guess, but he's a study type of guy. No social skills.

My father built himself a really good network of friends from WashU. Tried to get my sister to go because he was pretty well known there I guess. He got a PHD in EE. The decision is up to you in the end. Visit the schools. St Louis is a bit of a dump IMO. I would probably go with Emory, but I think with WashU there would be a better network built.

I went to Emory for undergrad and wouldn't really recommend it. It's extremely expensive, and they really don't cater much to the undergrads as far as facilities and faculty. At least this was my experience as a chem major. Much of the equipment we used was ANCIENT and more often than not the lower-level classes were taught by a clueless TA that you could never find if you needed help outside of class. I just think you can do a lot better for that much money. Their grad programs are all excellent tho....seems like that's where they spend all the loot they make off the underclassmen.

On the upside, the campus is very nice, and Atlanta is a lot of fun (if you have a car....if not, forget it). Pretty nice weather through the winter, it can get cold, but very rarely below freezing.

PM me if you have specific questions, I'd be happy to help.

yeah I as far as I could tell WashU would be the better undergrad institution (which I forgot to specify, apologies) but Emory would be more temperate and infinitely more convenient for travel seeing as Atlanta is a hub for Delta. I'm disappointed (and a little surprise, quite frankly) to hear that you had such a poor experience. Considering Emory's substantial endowment (one of the top in the nation) I would hope that the facilities would be on the cutting-edge. Oh well, I'll be visiting in a couple of weeks but if any present or past attendees of either school are around, I would appreciate your experience. Thanks again

Oh, that's one more reason not to go to Emory. If you want to go into CS and be in Atlanta, go to Georgia Tech. Campus isn't nearly as nice, but Emory's CS program is a joke compared to theirs. I would seriously give GT a look while you're here.

Plus they have a football team....hehe.

Good luck,

yeah I considered GATech, but I didn't really want to go there for undergrad. I aim to get a nice and balanced undergrad education and then go to grad school for the MS or whatever... plus, you can't really beat Emory's 44/56 male/female population

You mean besides the fact that they're all obnoxious rich twats from New Jersey? Then yeah, I suppose the ratio is a good thing.

Anyway, you are correct in thinking that you will get a much more balanced education somewhere like Emory. GA Tech produces really good engineers, but they tend to be a little stunted socially speaking (my dad went to tech and I have many friends who did as well, so trust me on that one)

The thing with Emory's absurd endowment vs what they spend on the undergrads is all about the rankings of their grad schools. That's where they spend all the money. We didn't even have A/C in the dorms when I was there (89-93). A lot of the equipment in the chem labs was from roughly the late 60s. I will say that a degree from Emory looks really good on your resume' if you decide to stay in the southeast for employment. If you visit and like it (and can afford it), go for it. Atlanta is definitely a fun town to live in...good music/bar scene, pro teams (even though they all kinda suck), close to mountains and oceans, still not absurdly expensive for such a big city, etc. I thought I'd move away as soon as I graduated, yet here I am still.....12 years after I got here.

Anywho, let me know if you need a tour guide or suggestions for things to do/see/eat while you're here. There are a ton of places that are mostly locals-only that the "Guide to Atlanta" books won't mention...especially restaurants and local music venues. Just let me know, and again good luck.
