My sister is asking me about a streamax box someone is trying to sell her for $300 . I've never heard of it and it sounds a little 'too good to be true'

The website: http://streamaxit.tv
The only thing I can find googling it are people selling it, and this Reddit page that isn't very helpful. https://www.reddit.com/r/cordcutter..._experience_with_streamaxtv/?ref=search_posts

Based on the Reddit thread it's an Android box using free software that is being sold marked up as some sort of pyramid scheme/multilevel marketing.

If it's just using free Android apps, which apps?

I recommended if she did buy it to use a credit card with good purchase protection so she can get her money back if the company disappears a few months after she buys it and the apps stop working.

That is a terrible purchase. It is a $100-ish Android box (at best) that just has Kodi and other apps pre-installed. Kodi is free.

Something like an Nvidia shield is WAY better for the price. It can run Kodi and play games.

Does kodi have a bunch of built in streams to access all the content they claim to have? Or is it setup to stream from their server or something?

I'm used to using plex to just stream my own media.

Kodi is an open source media center with the ability to have plugins for streaming services. Some of these services are legal (such as the plugin I use for Khan Academy) while others stream illegal content from different pirate streaming services (P2P and otherwise). Kodi by default doesn't include any of these pirate plugins because it would be sued off the internet if they did.

These guys aren't hosting any of these pirate services. What they have done is taken Kodi and developed a basic GUI to make it all semi-remote driven on a $100 Android box. Then they have automated installing these pirate plugins, which anyone with a basic knowledge of computers can do by themselves.

The reason it is such a bad deal, other than the hardware not being NEAR worth that much, is because there exists an OFFICIAL version of the Android OS for use on a set top box that they aren't using (because using the official version would mean no pirate plugins and might cost them more money). So rather than use the phone version of the Netflix app that they crappily hack to work on a tv you can instead get something like the Nvidia Shield that has an Netflix app that is MEANT to be on a TV.

This product is the equivalent of selling you a pirate Blu Ray on the subway for the full price of a regular Blu Ray. It is that bad of a deal in all directions.

I would suggest that you and your sister contact the guy and ask for a free 24hr demo. That is what i did and i love mine. I am not a tekkie person and i only payed $250 for mine with two remotes. One a keyboard the other a traditional remote. I canceled my cable and have been happy every sInce. There is a facebook forum for support and the quality of the set is satisfactory. Its not like i am carrying it all over the house. The live tv feature is nice as well. I would suggest using a wireless mouse for ease of use navigating thru the different screens. I was also given a 1 year warranty.

Those boxes sell you plugins you can obtain for free. The content you watch using those plug ins is not free. They are just doing the work of installing it all for you. Most of the content they claim to offer is pirated stuff. I don't condone that at all. This is why Kodi gets associated with piracy all the time. People load up boxes with Kodi and claim to offer you this fancy device to access nearly any movie etc. for free. That is digital piracy and Kodi gets associated with this which is bad for them as they don't want to be known for that. Kodi is a media player software that costs nothing if you want to use it.

The whole Kodi project is in jeopardy because of these people. The developers don't want to be associated with piracy and tons of people are coming to them for support when the pirate plugins inevitably stop working.

Yup. I have donated a lot more to the Kodi foundation recently to help in the fight.

I concur. The (expletive deleted) pirate box sellers are setting people up to fail, in their pricing, reliability, exploitation of their clients, risk to their clients, and so on. All with a promise of "Free TV and Movies forever". Although I applaud the writers of Kodi for the versatility of their platform, the double edged sword of "pure open source" has allowed the opportunistic jerks to soil their brand.

It would be awesome to have a herd of lawyers sue the people selling these piracy boxes to oblivion with proceeds going to the Kodi Foundation.

Why can't MPAA/ RIAA go after those guys who actually deserve it?
