Anyone heard of these musicians?

I was getting real tired of the music I had, and couldn't find anything I liked on the radio or on the billboard charts. So I went to Amazon and used their "find similar artists" function starting with the few bands I did like. I've come up with a lot of good music, but I haven't heard of most of it, and I'm just wondering how many people have:

Afghan Whigs
Badly Drawn Boy
Belle & Sebastian
Blur
Coldplay
Dandy Warhols
Elliot
Goldfrapp
Grandaddy
Hooverphonic
JJ72
Kent
Lambchop
Placebo
Poe
Portishead
Sigor Ros
Stereolab
Stranglers
Suede
Supergrass

Plus, if anybody does have similar tastes, recommend a band I don't have on the list. It's amazing the stuff that gets airtime of the radio instead of this stuff.

I don't know how you can have Blur and Placebo on the same list

I also know Portishead and the Warhols.

Which one do you like? Blur or Placebo. Blur had that "Song 2" out that got air-time...got pretty annoying after a while, but I enjoyed their Parklife album.

suede, blur, dandy warhols, hooverphonic, stereolab, and portishead have all put out good music. actually, check out stereolab. they've put out a lot of good stuff.

i never did get much into belle and sebastian, coldplay, or badly drawn boy much. belle and sebastian is definitely big with the indie crowd, but coldplay and badly drawn boy are just so musically formulaic. nothing new in listening to them

The only one I've ever heard was Blur. Hmm, the rest I don't think I've heard. Maybe they never got credit and were played on TV or something?

Actually nicene, this is all music I have now. It's just that I've never heard anyone else mention most of them, and none of my friends have heard of them. I've been listening to B&S If You're Feeling Sinister every night for the last week...It's good late night music.

As a independent rock dj at my college radio station I can tell you a few things about a few of these bands:

Belle & Sebastian - check out tigermilk or if you are feeling sinister both albums are great
Grandaddy - The sophtmore slump is good
Sigor Ros - unworldy, one of the best albums this year was Ágætis Byrjun
Stereolab - awesome band

If you really want out of mainstream radio a good place to start is to pick up some of these albums; they are pretty much indie rock most heralded gems:

Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain
Pixies - anything , but esp Surfer Rosa and Doolittle
Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand, Mag Earwhig - lofi pop rock genius

Stuff that I personally love:

Magnetic Fields - Holiday
Sixths - Wasp's Nest
Minders - Cul de sacs and dead ends
Apples in Stereo - Fun Trick Noisemaker
Dismemberment Plan - Emergency and I
Clash - London Calling - not indie but man this album is spectacular
Modest Mouse - The moon and antartica
Beulah - When Your Heartstrings Break - one of my most cherished albums, wonderful pop songs

.... and the list goes on..

If you live in an area that has a local college radio station check them out! You'd be surprised at the quality of musical programming played!

Afgahn Whigs
Blur
Coldplay
Poe
Portishead

I've got albums from all of the above---gotta say the Portishead "Dummy" album is incredible.
One of the best albums I've ever heard. The Afghan Whigs "Gentleman" album is damn fine, too.

AtmaWeapon: Apples in Stereo - Fun Trick Noisemaker

never got much into the whole apples in stereo/ bis/ olivia tremor control style.

i do listen to luna a bit. sorta similar, but i only dig it cause it sounds a lot like the velvet underground. Clash is definitely a good mention. for those of you that aren't familiar with the whole late 70's/80's punk scene, you definitely need to check out the clash, sex pistols, misfits, dead kennedys, and the ramones(especially in light of recent events).

Agreed nicene! Tip of the iceberg though!

The Ramones ruled (and still rules), and the punk scene is always interesting but I love the elephant 6 stuff, good pop/rock for a sunny day.

Modest Mouse- The Lonesome Crowded West is also very good.

check out The Gorillaz it's the lead singer Damon from Blur, Dan "The Automator" and more. Del Tha Funkee Homsapien lays some vocals down on a couple of tracks. Some of the best stuff that I have heard lately.

anybody seen the new documentary of the sex pistols? it's a new release at my local video store. i've been meaning to rent it, but wondered if any of you have seen it. a quick aside now that i got into the movie topic--for those of you really interested in oldskool punk scene , i definitely recommend renting SLC Punk next time you are at your local blockbuster or other video rental store.

i know i'm completely running rampant on this thread, but if anyone is looking to listen to the absolutely best d'rock band ever, you must...i repeat must...check out the jon spencer blues explosion. from experience i'll tell you that you probably won't like it that much on first listen, but if you give it a chance, it will rock your soul out. music doesn't get any better than that

hehe... I don't know a single artist on your list DioCssius.

Then again, I prefere to listen to classic rock from late 60's and the 70's, and I think that these on your list are newer.

heh, what can i say, music is my life. you a dj at your college radio station then? i've been trying to do the same here at ncsu. nothing would kick more ass than being a dj for college radio. our station here plays some good stuff too. i don't listen to the radio any more though unless i'm in a vehicle without cd player(in which case i try to pick up a radio station with integrity). most stations invariably play crap. there is a local black college that has a kickass station. they play a lot of good jazz. speaking of which, i'm gonna probably be checking out medeski, martin, and wood in may. they are playing in georgia, but i think a 5 hour drive is justified . john scofield is also putting in a performance in mid-june here in the area. i couldn't make it to his show last time he was in the area so i'll definitely try to catch this one

datalink7, yeah, they're all fairly new, but I do listen to Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and others. I'm mostly looking for newer groups though.
