on another music releted note--saw krs-one last week live. that show absolutely rocked. it must seem like i've got too many musical preferences, but those of you that still listen to the radio really need quit doing so. go out there and discover some other music. the music industry is about one of the few industries i know of where the crap generally rises to the top, while all the diamonds stay beneath the surface. guess that's the meaning of diamond in the rough it's really depressing how many good artists get overlooked, while 90's pop gets so much attention.

Afghan Whigs
Blur
Dandy Warhols
Goldfrapp
Poe
Portishead
Stereolab
Suede
Supergrass

I like all these bands especially songs by Suede: Stay Together, Animal Nitrate, and the Drowners.

I recommend Bettie Seveert: Ray Ray Rain, Ash: Kung Fu Fighting, Girl from Mars, Cowboy Junkies: Sweet Jane, Goldfinger: Here in the Bathroom.

Umm...those are all the songs/bands I can think of. Memory trip through high school.

Agreed Nicene! I love being a DJ at my radio station, its tough with school and all but most definately worth it! Do everything in your power to be a dj, I'm sure your show would rock nicene! You go in with lots of musical knowledge but come out with so much more!

<< I was getting real tired of the music I had, and couldn't find anything I liked on the radio or on the billboard charts. So I went to Amazon and used their "find similar artists" function starting with the few bands I did like. I've come up with a lot of good music, but I haven't heard of most of it, and I'm just wondering how many people have:

Afghan Whigs NO
Badly Drawn Boy NO
Belle & Sebastian NO
Blur HELL YEAH
Coldplay YES
Dandy Warhols NO
Elliot NO
Goldfrapp NO
Grandaddy NO
Hooverphonic NO
JJ72 NO
Kent NO
Lambchop NO
Placebo HELL YEAH
Poe HELL YEAH
Portishead YES
Sigor Ros NO
Stereolab YES
Stranglers NO
Suede YES
Supergrass YES (saw them in concert)

Plus, if anybody does have similar tastes, recommend a band I don't have on the list. It's amazing the stuff that gets airtime of the radio instead of this stuff.

That's cool nicene, I feel like I have fairly diverse tastes too. For some of my friends, it seems like music has to be popular for them to listen to it. One of my friends, when I asked him if he liked a cd I played, actually said, "Umm, I know you can like music just listening to it. For me, it has to in a movie or on the radio. That gives it meaning."

by the way, i should probably mention that there is a distinction between london suede and suede. a lot of people confuse the two. actually london suede was originally just called suede but had to change their name. i've a a pretty rare single of trash by suede. so rare in fact that i can't find mention of it anywhere on ubl, although it is on suede's official site

Stranglers is a seminal band of the 80's, who still plays in the 90's. They used to be punk, morphed into some strange new wave (Sisters of Mercy/Mission - like ), but still, it's great stuff, if you're into 80's type of music. The vocalist has a very pleasant voice as well, unlike some new bands I could name...

All in all, your list is very varied. I have heard most of the bands there, and I'm personally not impressed. Of course, my opinion is highly subjective. I absolutely loathe Portishead (I feel too much bad drama in it).

Suede is called "The London Suede" in North America (apparently there's abunch of losers somewhere with this name), but it's great pop (a la Pulp) - what the Brits call "shoegazing". Brett Anderson is a great guitar player, and an interesting musician.

Blur - well, hard to believe you don't know them. They were at some point Oasis' number one rival, until Damon Albarn (the leader) started getting into more experimental stuff, which alienated some followers and made the band lose its mainsteam appeal. I have mixed feelings toward some of their endeavors, but all in all, they're worth listening to.

It would be interestin if you'd post the bands that you started the search with (what you already know that you like) - this way we can make better recommendations.

Blur is brilliant, thats all I can say. They are one of teh most challenging bands to come out in the last decade. Other than that, all I can say is that you might wnat to invest some money into the britpop genre, however, blur are no longer britpop and the movement is on its last stretch.
