My boyfriend is allergic to dogs, and I've been dying to get a dog since I moved out; it won't be for another ~5-6 months but I'd like to survey my options and do the most research before going out and getting one.

Also, I'm definitely going to be rescuing one, not buying one. I don't care if they're a puppy or an adult, just as long as it's loving I'll take them home.

The problem is that while dogs can be hypoallergenic, they still produce dander--and the boyfriend is very, very allergic. He's fine for a few hours, but he can't be "nice" to the dog; aka, having them sit in his lap, letting them sleep in bed for the night, pet them too much, etc.

My question is: anyone here allergic to dogs (epi-pen worthy) and yet still have a dog? I don't want a hairless one, good GOD those are ugly.

If he's that allergic I'd say you're screwed, try to find an intelligent cat instead.

I am not allergic to dogs, but I am allergic to cats. As much as I love cats, I wouldn't suffer through the hell of allergies that don't go away just to have one.

I guess I'm not an animal lover because it sounds ridiculous to get a pet if you know that your partner is "very, very allergic."

Your boyfriend is inferior. Allergies are a sign of weakness, and should be wiped out of our gene pool. Everyone knows this.

I believe if you get a dog that *doesn't* shed you won't have to worry about allergies. You likely will have to take the dog to a groomer for hair cuts periodically (or learn to do it yourself) though.

"Generally speaking, dogs that don't shed are the best option for allergy sufferers. Non shedding breeds are considered to be hypoallergenic which means they don't produce as many allergens through flaky dead skin and dander, which is what triggers the allergies. "

If you're very picky about the breed he might not react. However, you may need to give up the thought of getting a rescue dog. If you have to look for a specific breed you might not be able to find them in a shelter. When I was growing up my allergies were worse to dogs and I did ok when we got a yorkie.

I'd be VERY careful though about getting a dog if he reacts so badly he needs an epi-pen for it. I wouldn't go for it if he's really worried about it.

I can vouch for those 2 breeds. I have a norfolk terrier, buddy of mine has a Havanese. Both dogs have been around people with allergies (some more sevre then others) and those people had no issues during extended time periods.

I'm allergic to cats and have two cats. I think I'm mostly over the allergy now. Most likely they exacerbate other allergy issues though.

How long have you been dating this guy? Odds are the relationship will be over before you're ready to get a dog.
