If so, where did you learn? I always thought it would be cool to know how to ballroom dance (for parties, night clubs, etc.), but I have a feeling that if I took formal dance lessons that I'd be the only single (heterosexual) male there. Sadly, my girlfriend of 1.5 years and I broke up recently, so I'd have to go at it solo. If I ever develop the skills, might give me an advantage with the ladies

Although, I might be past the typical age group that takes those classes as well, as I'm in my mid-20s.

Anyone here ever take ballroom dance lessons?

Oh and the obligatory:

I was taught to Polka and Waltz by my family when I was young.

My girlfriend and I also took ballroom dancing lessons. It was actually kind of fun. I was not the only heterosexual male there, in fact I think everyone in the class were couples (5 couples?). We learned at a local dance studio. They did 6 one hour lessons and we learned 3 types of dance.

Check out the swing dance clubs in your area. Most have weekly dances with lessons. Also great place to meet women.

Also check your local city parks and rec. They usually offer classes.

Whatever you do don't go to Arthur Murray. They will be expensive and try to bleed you dry.

I had a ballroom dance class in college. I'm toying with the idea of taking ballroom dance classes now that I've moved, as well. I think it would help with meeting people, and I found it fun when I tried it before. I've always assumed that most of the males in formal ballroom dancing are heterosexual. I mean, they're dancing with females.

Besides. Women like a man who can dance. Or so I've heard. :sneaky:

The other reason that I'm considering it is that some friends of mine are into swing dancing, and it would be nice to be able to participate without feeling like a fool because I don't know what I'm doing. One of the ballroom dance studios down here apparently teaches everything from swing to tango, so I'm definitely considering it.

I took ballroom dance lessons with my girlfriend a few years back. We were about 20 and the youngest ones there. It was 70% older (50+) married couples. The remaining 30% was mostly girls (not necessarily single, but they came without a guy). The girls would dance with each other (exchanging the role of guy/girl) because they didn't have any other options. So, an additional guy at the lesson would be greatly welcomed.

I've been taking lessons at a local dance studio for a few months. I was tired being the guy that turns down dancing because 'i don't know how'.

The group classes are usually 15-20 people and typically have one or two extra guys. Most (~70-80%) of the people in the class are over 50 years old and the remaining 20% are people in their 20s. Since you rotate partners every few minutes, it's not a big deal to go by yourself.

I've been doing mostly social dances: salsa, bachata, swing (east and west coast), and 2-step country. Ballroom/standard dances are fun, but not much use outside of the classroom.

I highly recommend it.

Definitely try out swing dancing. I'm sure there are regular dances in your area.
I don't think ballroom is that great... ballroom dances aren't really social dances and you can only do them for formal occasions.

I go swing dancing about twice a week. In Seattle there are 2 main swing venues that each have dances twice a week. The floor is usually pretty full. They always give a free beginner lesson before the dance - I'm pretty sure that's a universal thing with swing dances. Swing is a relaxed, casual, fun dance (salsa is not the first two of those).

I've been taking lessons at one of the swing venues for 4 years. It's usually $50 for 4-5 lessons and the instructors are amazing. At least half of the people go there single and they trade off dance partners. There are between 15-50+ people at the classes. I'm 28 and I'm probably the average of swing dancers so you're not even close to being too old.

Again, I highly recommend swing. Ballroom is more the older crowd and not as fun. Swing and salsa are filled with younger people and I find swing infinitely more fun.

I think it's important that if you want to take lessons, decide which dance you want to take (swing because it's awesome) and try to take lessons through the organization/studio/building that holds the popular swing dances. They are usually much better at teaching that specific dance and prices are pretty low.

Salsa is a really good choice too.

First things first. Go to some dance clubs and figure out which one you want to learn.

Learn the side step, easy shift, double step hesitation, rock step and freeze frame [easiiest imo]. It should take you a day or so and you are good to go.

I dance about four nights a week and have been doing so for the past year or so. great icebreaker at clubs and women gravitate to you when you can go to a club and be the first one dancing.

Also once you learn those four moves, learn about musicality basically toning down the movement and moving to the music and when the beat changes.

Also remember levels and movement. when you move ur hand, body, every beat use a different level, dont do the same action multiple times. position you body at different heights.

and keep moving on the dance floor. dont stay on one spot and go through your repertoire of moves. You should always keep changing altitude, angles and keep moving.

For night clubs, ballroom dancing is weird. I mean at parties, regular club dancing is more than sufficient.

Also dont be decent with a girl on the floor, when dancing with her, take control

rub her body continuously, pull her hair, slap her ass [ each double beat or every beat]. It has worked 100 percent of the time. poeple just stop dancing and stare in shock when they see me doing that on the dance floor.

Not a single girl has refused and they love to be the center of attraction.
