Anyone here ever quit smoking cigarettes?

I smoked off and on for about three years. I quit when I started dating my wife because the smoke and smell makes her physically ill and it was basically the cancer sticks or her. So I chose her. It was easier for me because I was always more of a social smoker than a hardcore smoker - I usually limited my smoking to when I wnet out to bars and clubs.

i quit 4 yrs ago, cold turkey. first three days are horrible then the following two weeks are just plain miserable. if you get past that everything improves dramaticly. i would recomend that PRIOR to quitting you develop an excercise and diet program.

currently a 6-7 smoke a day person. i'll beat it again soon.

Yes. I quit. Had a cigerrtte about 3 months later and threw ot hte pack I just bought.

The only reasons people can't quit is beause:
1) They are lazy
2) they have no self discipline
and
3) they need instant gratification

You're an idiot. It's all about genetics and brain chemistry. I'm utterly incapable of being addicted to something. I've smoked cigarettes and marijuana at different times in my live (massive amounts for extended periods of time) and neither ever took hold of me. I also had a long stretch where I wanted to drink all the time. In all three instances, I just decided one day that I didn't want to any more, so I didn't.

Not everyone can do that.

I'm a pavlov dog smoker.

Paid Work = smoke
Drinking at Bar = smoke
Work around the house, for family, etc = No Smoke
Drinking outside of Bar = No Smoke

I'll smoke at work, but have no desire to smoke outside of work-- high stress levels I guess, I don't know. I have no desire to smoke on weekends or holidays, and it usually doesn't even cross my mind. I have no desire to smoke at home. I have great desire to smoke at a bar, but not when casually drinking at a friends house. I've been on two week vacations, and had not thought about having a cig. Been like this for almost 20 years.

The only answer to quitting smoking is to quit working

I smoked for ten years, and it will be three years in November since I quit. It's hard for me to even imagine that I ever smoked now. My only regret was that I didn't do it sooner. When you quit you feel better, breathe easier, and smell a whole lot better.


I guess the worst thing for me about quiting was I could all of a sudden smell smoke in people, clothes, and other items. It made me want to puke. I work on PC's and had a hard time working on someone's PC if they were a smoker because it physically made me sick to my stomach.

I can't believe I used to subject myself and others to that crap. Especially my son. I always told myself that it was no big deal to him because I always smoked outside, but now I know better.

What makes me furious is seeing people smoking in their cars with kids in the back and the windows rolled up. I always lay on the horn and and ask them how they'd like it if I forced them to sniff my ass all day against their will. Even people walking outside with their kids and a cigarette hanging from their lip drives me nuts.

Anyway, back on track, if you want to quit you just have to decide you want to do it and quit being a pvssy about it. That's all there is to it.

edit: I smoked for 14+ years BTW

I used the gum and it worked. It helps you get through the bad cravings the first few days.

Sept 15th is my 10 month mark. I quit using the patch. (but honestly it was more of a mental thing than the patch)

I told my wife the second she got pregnant, I would quit out of respect for her and my child. Well when we were trying I decided I should just go ahead and get a head start on "quitting"

I had tried quitting several times before that, but I never had a "reason" to quit, and I never really decided that "this will be the last cig of my life" Once I did that, quitting wasnt so hard.

Ex Pack-a-day smoker for about 10 years.

I used to get pretty nasty chest colds when I smoked. I would get about 1 per year, and they would usually last about 2 weeks. During that time smoking was about the last thing I wanted to do. The last cold I got *about 7 years ago now* I just decided to quit. Once I started getting over the cold, the "hell weeks" were already over. At that point, I decided to just not go back.

I am pretty much like Ilmater, I dont really have an addictive personality. I know it was easier for me than many other people.

i did, but i didn't smoke that long and was only a "social" smoker, never over 1 pack/day
i only smoked about 10-11 months, so quitting wasn't hard
i also moved/changed social situations, so it was easy
