I have been trying to quit for the longest time....I have tried everything, the patch, the gum, the pill and the only thing that has even mildly worked has been the patch. I know I should quit, its expensive and a nasty habit...but I just cant seem to do it...someone help me out here and give me some words of wisdom

I do!!! And I know the reasons to quit...but its just such a habit...I have been smoking for ten years now...I dont know what to do if I am not smoking...the last time I quit for a month. But I gained 25 lbs in that month...so I decided I would rather be a smoker than a fatty...but now I am working out and eating alot better so weight shouldnt be a problem...but damn...I just cant seem to find the right inspiration

This is a shot in the dark since I'm not a smoker, but perhaps working some exercise into your daily routine would help? Nothing like a nice shot of endorphins to take the edge off, right?

Can any former smokers back me up on this?

I'm right with you there. I just can't seem to quit. I need some sort of motivation. I guess "Living a Long Healthy Life" just isn't enough for me.

I agree, it's stupid. I don't need people telling me that. But sometimes I think it would be just impossible. Like, when I go out with my friends and drink, I DO NOT know how I would do that.

I suck.

I smoked for about 7 years before i quit. You just need something to really motivate you. For instance, i use to cheat every once in awhile, but everytime i did, i got so pissed i would only smoke one cigarette, then toss the entire pack away (flushed it actually). Do that enough times, and you'll start realizing the cost of it.

If you are REALLY serious, do something like that. Everytime you cheat... you're allowed to, but only one smoke and you have to throw the entire pack away. That's some real motivation.

I would agree with you. Back when I used to work out I never smoked since I was not only working out but having 4-5 hours of soccer practice per day. Damn I need to get back into doing that to get back into the shape I used to be in.

I started to smoke after I stopped playing soccer, and I have been an on and off smoker (all social now) for about a year.

Not really... infact it can have the opposite effect. When you're working out, you're stressing your body... and you actually have a craving for a smoke after the workout (same principle as to why some people need a smoke after sex).

I am working out now...I feel a hell of alot better....but just a fair warning...the first few times you get your heartrate up when you have that patch on is kind of scary....I thought the old ticker was going to blow...but it eased up after the first few times

YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DRASTIC. i smoked for 7 years, and though it was cool to smoke in the beg. since my friends did it. then i got addicted to it. i can stand smokers but dont believe i was dumb enough to smoke for so long. what helped me was going to tony robbins. i didn't want to quit smoking, but since i have left his seminar i have been smoke free (it's been about a month a half now)

Quit cold turkey. First try. No mental prep work. No gums, patches, etc. My friend did too a year and a half later.

As for words of wistom: cut the sh1t. Stop being so damn weak. Stop making it look like a big deal, because it isn't. Stop pretending it's hard because people with zero determination say it is. Stop acting like you need to substitute cigs with gum/patch/etc to quit. Just quit. If my grandfather did it after 65 years, you can after 10!

How did i do?

I guess it's an individual thing. I was just thinking that those I know who have tried to quit get pretty damn wound up on occasion and a trip to the gym might alleviate some of that.

You think going to a seminar is drastic? Do you also think you're living life on the edge because you go grocery shopping after dark?

I quit smoking a few years ago. It wasn't "easy", but neither was it the most difficult challenge I've ever faced. You have to keep busy to occupy both your mind and your body. The cravings come on strong but they also pass rather quickly if you just get busy doing something.

You have to be psychologically prepared for the anxiety and plan ways to deal with it. Embrace the anxiety, not as a negative, but as a positive.

And of course, don't quit quitting!

1. Set a date to quit, like 2 months from now. It helps prepare you mentally.

2. Let your friends, family and co-workers know of your quit date. You'll get lots of support from them and it helps you really commit to that date.

3. Read. Read. Read. Learn everything you can about smoking. webmd.com is a good resource.

Do the patch, gum, or whatever, when you get to that date. Good luck!

Remember, when you quit, and then cheat, the addiction comes back stronger. Resist all temptation to cheat. Many people will think they are over it and think that one stick won't hurt. Blah! That's how so many quitters end up smoking again after a few months of being smokefree.

Cold turkey is the only way to go. I smoked for 12 years and have been smoke free for 6. I was smoking a pack to 2 packs a day of Camel's and Newports

Go to places where people don't smoke. Stay out of smoky pool halls and bars. Chew gum(Not that nicosh!t stuff though)

Cold turkey is your best option. I smoked for about 7 years and finally just quit cold turkey once and for all. You'll be jonesing for a smoke for a while, but just try not to think about it. Eventually, it gets better. I haven't smoked for over a year now, but I still get mild cravings now and then.

Just think about how much better things will be: You won't be spending almost $5 for a pack of smokes, you won't smell bad, your chances of lung cancer are a lot less, etc.

It isn't easy to give it up, but it can be done. I tried 500 million times before my wife finally got me to quit right before we got married, and I'm still glad I did.

Good luck!
