My optometrist talked me into getting Crizal lenses for my new reading glasses. He said they would really help with the glare from working at the computer and in a room with flourescent lighting. They haven't arrived yet, he said it would take a bit longer to get them than usual, but I've been reading a little about them in the meantime and it sounds like there may be some problems associated with them.
It sounds like it might be hard to keep them clean and that the AR coating could peel off.

Anyone have any experience with them?

Very old thread.

I hear that the Crizal AR coating is pretty good - just slightlly better than the UTMC stuff by Sola. But try getting the AR stuff on Plastic or high-index lenses because AR doesn't stick very well on Polycarbornate lenses. I know - I own a optical lab processing this stuff.

My 2cents...

I had Crizal on my previous pair of glasses, and just got it again on my new one.

They are harder to keep clean, that's true. Not sure quantitatively how much better they are than w/o coating, but if they say it will make it better for me, $75 is a small fee for something I use all day Never had any problems with it peeling, but then again I've never dunked it in Windex. I just tuse the stuff they give me for it.

And BTW I have a strong prescription, so the Crizal is also supposed to stop from light refraction within the lens. Or something.

Thanks, Kaieye and stultus.

I'm not sure, but I believe my lenses are plastic, they always are anyway since I usually order rimless ones.

They told me that I'd have to use the cloth and cleaner that comes with it, but they didn't tell me the part about them being more likely to attract oils and water spots.

Thanks again.

Haha yes the water spots do get annoying, but don't worry, you can't see the water spots when you put your glasses on. You only notice them when you take your glasses off.

One thing that you will notice is that if you take your glasses, and hold them up to florecent lighting, the reflection of the light on your glasses will be green. So I guess it's doing, something, lol.

They are the worse lenses ever they stay smudged all day without you even having to touch them. It is so annoying I could just scream.

Compared to my old glasses these have a lot less glare and internal reflection than my old ones. I have a pretty strong prescription and on my old glasses I end up wearing a baseball cap to help cut down on the glare. On the Crizal I don't feel the need. I haven't noticed any difference in keeping the lenses clean, but I'm very nearsighted and anything on the lens makes me crazy anyway. I wear contacts most of the time and only wear glasses at night or when I need to rest my eyes.

I am fine with Crizal.

I have had for quite a while. Don't use towels that have been in the drier with dryer sheets tho == smear. I have a few of the little clothes that come from with the glasses which work quite well.

I fell for the hype about the anti-glare, anti-smudge and scratch resistance. I will NEVER buy this junk again. i recently stopped wearing contacts due to the need for bifocals and didn't want to have to be cleaning my glasses constantly. That and I'm a mechanic and scratches are a risk. Well I can wash my hands thoroughly with degreasing soap and dry them with paper towels they the are not oily and then accidentally touch my lenses and there is a smudge. Forget about normal skin oils, you get smudges no matter what. I was fanatical about rinsing my lenses first under a strong stream of water, then using dish soap as instructed. I would keep my special cloth folded up and put away so it stayed clean except when using it to dry my lenses. And the lenses still had find scratches in less than two months. My first pair of lenses had a fish-eye between the mid and distance areas so they had to be replaced, and the exact same thing happened to the second pair, less than two months and they are scratched, by following the directions and using the special Crizal cloth. It is nice how the water beads up and as far as glare, I don't see a difference between these and the glasses I had when I wore contacts with no coating at all.

Crizal lens coating is NOT worth the money, even if it were a dollar.
