So my gum receded after I got a tooth abscess... Zit on Gum. Apparently I got something stuck between the gums of an abscessed tooth and it got infected and swollen. The gum around that tooth receded a bit and I am a bit concern at the moment.

I went to the dentist and he said that I need a root canal on that tooth.

Thing is, is that I also need to get my wisdom teeth removed so he said I should just do one step at a time so I am getting my wisdom teeth removed first.
How bad is gum recession?

It's not ideal, but not a huge deal. People naturally get recession as they age. You'll have to take better care of your teeth since you'll have exposed tooth not protected by enamel. Use a soft brush, and brush every day.

I got gum grafting done this June due to excessive recession.

As mentioned, brush daily (or twice+/day) with a soft brush.

And the thing i don't do, floss!

Floss more often. I was told by my dentist that my gums were receding a bit. I started flossing more often and now I'm ok. Also I'd wait out on a root canal, gargle lot of salt water, use mouthwash after brushing/flossing and the abscess might go away on it's own. I occasionally get one. Also try to squeeze it, the infection might come out. I hate how dentists often jump straight to wanting to do a major procedure. Your teeth are the only one you have for life. The less holes, grinding, and fillings done to them, the longer they will last.

My gums have been receded on my lower front teeth since I was 11 or so. Every dentist mentions it, but it hasn't been a big deal so far (29). I have ehlers-danlos syndrome makes me prone to it : (

Was made aware of it 10 years ago. I do use a soft brush & brush every day.
I floss a few times a week, but not every day.

Your Teeth & Gums HAVE to be cleaned! Other wise it can cause problems like constant colds and sinus infections due to dirty gums saturated with bad bacteria. e.g. going to that corner bar that doesn't clean their vats that often because they don't make enough money to buy new grease thus the vats end up like GIANT cess pools of bad bacteria from constantly cooking Hot wings, Fries, etc. Don'tget me wrong, i LOVED those damn wings but after years of health problems I knocked that off the fun list - sad indeed.

You can floss just don't dig down into your gum line. IMO flossing is just there to free up any food stuck in your teeth after your eat so it doesn't sit there and cause tooth decay.

You need to make sure to use the proper technique and the proper brush - so that you clean the gumline (massaging gently with bristles in place in a small circular motion) without actually scrubbing the gumline (which most people do and hastens gum recession). Nobody really explained that to me until I was in my 20's, thanks tons Mr Dentist.

The whole deal with the gum grafiting is not effective depending on which dentist you talk to, I would advise seeking multiple opinions if it ever comes to that. As my dentist says - you're basically grafting skin to a dead surface. The graft will eventually recede back to your original gumline.

I rarely use a tooth-brush anymore. I just squeeze a little toothpaste in my mouth and swish it around making sure my gums get the cleaning and then I spit it out.. after every time i eat.

Nope. My biggest problem is all the cheap dental work I had in the Navy which started breaking down a year after I left. I needed all kinds of work done to correct it. And it wasnt freakin cheap.

I just had gum replacement surgery about four months ago (a gingival graft), due to an attachment between my lower lip and the gums on my lower front teeth that pulled them down. It was strange, I had a little pain, and I lost my gums over a period of only a few weeks.

The surgery itself wasn't so bad. The initial Novocaine shot hurt, but after that I didn't feel anything. The surgery lasted about half an hour, and it was weird watching him sew inside my mouth. The pain started about an hour later after the Novocaine wore off, and it was pretty bad. I took Advil for a couple of days, and was on a liquid diet and later soft food, for about a month. For about 2 weeks after the surgery, I couldn't brush, and just used a prescription mouth rinse to clean my teeth. After that, I brushed carefully around the affected area for the next couple months, until I felt comfortable brushing normally with a regular toothbrush. Now I am back to my electric.

I did as just a part of getting older.

I switched to a oralb electric toothbrush and it has helped, also does a better job cleaning.

I haven't had a cavity since since the early 80's. I brush and floss twice daily. I also visit the dentist twice a year, and have done so since I was a child. Gums and teeth are extremely healthy. I never use mouthwash. Just rinse with water after brushing/flossing.

Good advice in here, but I'll add using a Sonicare helps a ton. I personally know 3 people including myself whose numbers got better after 3 months of using it. And no, they arent the same as any other electric toothbrush.

I went from 4's and 5's to 2's and 3's after switching to my Sonicare.
