So what's the deal with the South Bend/Mishawaka area, is it a decent place to live? I'm headed out that way this Saturday to look at a few homes, the houses are pretty reasonable and the taxes are'nt bad either. However a few years ago while on a business trip to Mishawaka I heard that there are some parts of Indiana that are extremely racist, so I'm trying to avoid ending up in a klan type of neighborhead. The last thing I need is a cross burning in my front lawn.

Indiana actually had the largest KKK population in the entire nation earlier in the 20th century. Everyone elected to their legislature was a Klan member.

Indiana is not where you want to be if you are worried about racism. I go to Attica, IN (outside of Lafayette) every few months and I am continually shocked by how ass-backwards some of these people are.

I live in Evansville, IN (3rd largest city in Indiana)... since this is a more urban area than other parts of the state, racism isn't as bad, but still slightly prevelant. In fact, I dated a biracial (black/white) girl for a couple years recently and had no problems with anyone (I'm white). Of course, watch out for rural areas.

I live in Evansville, IN but originally came from a smaller Indiana town closer to Louisville, KY. In the more urban areas you shouldn't have any problems and if you do it would just be from some random redneck. In a small town setting you would probably see a lot more of it as the percentage of country boys goes up.

Hoosiers are for the most part very friendly and helpful, though just like everywhere else it does have a few bad apples.

To be honest? The Midwest is far more racist than the South, IMO.

I lived in GA, SC and NC for 10 years. And I've lived in meduim sized towns in the Midwest for 6 years. I see FAR more racism here than I did in the South.

I agree with this. I have lived up in the North (NY & Ohio) and currently in the South (Texas). Much more racism up North than down here in the South.

But as far as Indiana, hey IU has a black head coach, so it can't be that bad.

Indiana isn't bad at all. I live in the South Bend/Mishawaka area and it really isn't anymore racist around here than in other areas. Maybe due to its proximity to Chicago.

IMO, the south is less racist but more regionist (?) - those small rural towns down there really don't like my northerner self in their parts. But just like everywhere, these stereotypes are mostly prevelant in the rural little towns - bigger cities are all the same.

From what you have stated, you haven't even lived in the midwest, so how can you agree with this, or, are you stating that anything but the south is more racist than the south?

NY is anything but midwest.

Ohio is not Midwest

Anything in the Central part of the US west of the Mississippi is the Midwest until you get to Colorado and the Rockies. Then its rocky mountain states, then further west is the western part of the US, etc.

Texas is the Southwest.

I live in Kansas, a MIDWEST plains state, and there is not much racism around here at all.

I am suprise to hear that IN is racist. I've been to the small town outside of Fort Wayne (can't remember its name on top of my head) for business and those folks were some of the nicest people that I ever meet.

Down south here is big time racist for sure (been here for over 20 years).

MIDWEST
A region of the north-central United States around the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi Valley. It is generally considered to include Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, (all east of the Miss.) Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. The area is known for its rich farmlands and highly industrialized centers.

Hmmm interesting comments, I guess it all depends on the town. I put a call into a local realtor out in South Bend so hopefully he will be able to give me a little more local information.

Man it sucks that racism still exists, I wish I could change colors then I could blend in with the locals. Chameleon style!!

I live in Indianapolis. My neighborhood is evenly mixed and as far as I know there haven't been any incidents. Now I have heard rumors about southern Indiana having a huge KKK population. But I haven't seen anything where I'm at.

Ohio IS in the Midwest. And I lived in upstate NY, so I mentioned the North. Ohio is a lot closer to Indiana than Kansas, btw.

And depending on who you talk to, Texas is either in the South or the Southwest, either way it's South of the Midwest/North.

The "experts" are wrong, sorry to burst your bubble.

West of the mississippi is west, case closed.

EDIT: This was discussed ad nauseum when I was in college and again in the workplace and consensus is that just like the term RICER which originally meant anyone driving a japanese car and now means anyone who modifies an import, typically a honda or toyota, the meaning or definition of the word has changed. Midwest is anything in the central US west of the mississippi while states like ohio, indiana, illinois, etc are considered ohil river valley area, crap, etc, take your pick.

LOL. that is wrong. Ohio River Valley is an area, not a a region, like the Midwest. You and your college are confusing the levels of the heirarchy.

When you break down the US into regions, it is generally North, South, West and Midwest. It can, in some instances include Southwest, Northwest and Northeast. But then, the next progression down the scale is Ohio River Valler, New England states, Sun Belt, Plain States, etc. Those are areas and are smaller in dimension than the regions.

Jesus christ. I've lived on IL for all of my life and it IS considered to be in the Midwest. Sorry to burst your bubble, but we have a lot more going on here in IL and MI and OH than KS, OK, and the likes. How do you like 'dem apples?

On topic:
I live in the Chicagoland area and go to school in Indiana about an hour or so northwest of Indianapolis. I notice almost zero racism, but then again I live in a college town that's pretty diverse. I dislike living in IN in general and therefore I prefer not to consort with the locals. I guess it could be pretty bad but if you stick to college and larger towns, I wouldn't worry.
