I am in Kansas too. and I am Asian. and there is Racism here - very visible too. IMHO, it only shows up when you are making more money than the whites thinks you should.

But there are 4 different region maps. Which one is more correct? Either way, Ohio is lumped in with Kansas on all but 1.

edit: On further inspection, these are maps used for historical mapping during the civil war. I'm not sure how these play out in this discussion.

I lived in GA, SC and NC for 10 years. And I've lived in meduim sized towns in the Midwest for 6 years. I see FAR more racism here than I did in the South.

I agree with this. I have lived up in the North (NY & Ohio) and currently in the South (Texas). Much more racism up North than down here in the South.

But as far as Indiana, hey IU has a black head coach, so it can't be that bad.

From what you have stated, you haven't even lived in the midwest, so how can you agree with this, or, are you stating that anything but the south is more racist than the south?

NY is anything but midwest.

Ohio is not Midwest

Anything in the Central part of the US west of the Mississippi is the Midwest until you get to Colorado and the Rockies. Then its rocky mountain states, then further west is the western part of the US, etc.

Texas is the Southwest.

I live in Kansas, a MIDWEST plains state, and there is not much racism around here at all.

Um, IL, OH and Indiana are in the Midwest.

The "Midwest" was named early and therefore covers these mideastern states.

Or let's just listen to the experts:

MIDWEST
A region of the north-central United States around the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi Valley. It is generally considered to include Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, (all east of the Miss.) Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. The area is known for its rich farmlands and highly industrialized centers.

The "experts" are wrong, sorry to burst your bubble.

West of the mississippi is west, case closed.

EDIT: This was discussed ad nauseum when I was in college and again in the workplace and consensus is that just like the term RICER which originally meant anyone driving a japanese car and now means anyone who modifies an import, typically a honda or toyota, the meaning or definition of the word has changed. Midwest is anything in the central US west of the mississippi while states like ohio, indiana, illinois, etc are considered ohil river valley area, crap, etc, take your pick.

I can't believe you would be fighting not to have the few states that bring the whole mid-west up a notch be listed as mid-western states.

I dunno, while walking around downtown New Orleans, I notice a group of asians walking around and then another group of black kids from the other side yelled out "hey it's Jackie Chan".
The asians should have yelled back, "and there's Chris Tucker!".

By the way, I remember talking to my ex's family once about this (they were black)... they live in the same area in Southwestern IN as I do, but they said that they never really faced any racism in this area. However, when they lived in Cincinnati, OH they saw huge amounts of discrimination everywhere.

The only bubble bursted is your own. The definition I posted above is the popularly accepted list of states that make up the "midwest." And contrary to your failed attempt to understand amongst your college buddies just WHY they are considered Midwest, the above listed states came to mean "Midwest" BEFORE the western states were states. If anything, it's an OUTDATED term, not a newly bastardized term.

At any rate, it IS the popularly accepted term to describe the region I posted above. That you have decided to ignore that fact will only lead to confusion among people you talk to.

Why are you guys even bothering arguing about this? This has no relevance to the OP's question.

I went to college in Indiana, and they were all under the impression that they lived in the midwest. I'll be sure to let them know they don't next time I'm out that way.

To answer the OP's question, definitely a lot of backwards people in Indiana. If you even want to be near other black people, you have to stick to the cities. I looked at some census numbers for a class, and one of the counties near my school had 50 black residents and 9 people who described themselves as eskimos. Indianapolis is a nice area and it's a few decades ahead of the rest of the state in terms of racial harmony.

To the person who brought up the IU basketball coach - Hoosiers care more about basketball than they're own racism.

I suggest you you check out local newspapers like the South Bend Tribune. The biggest racism I encounter is the hatered of The Fightin' Irish

Not really. IL has tighter gun control, most fireworks are illegal and, well, just far more nanny state laws. IL taxes are also higher.

Chicago's influence is felt throughout the state, making it the liberal east coaster of the Midwest. And when I say liberal, I mean all the negative aspects of liberalism, not the positive ones.

I've noticed that a lot of people equate a lack of diversity with racism. Sure, out in rural Indiana it's mostly white people, but that does not make the area racist. I guess this view is maybe expected with ATOTs high volume of liberal westerners.

The difference is that most white Southerners actually know, work with and grow up alongside black people. Both sides do talk a lot of racist trash, but there's real respect for one another that comes from experience. In the South you see black people holding positions of authority, running businesses and holding public office. It's so common you hardly think about it. White Midwesterners in general don't have that kind of contact, so they base their whole idea of the race from a very few individuals, and the media.
