I read my post after I posted it and realized I came across that way. Maybe I should have separated the backwards people and the lack of diversity into different paragraphs. I can tell you though that aside from the lack of diversity, there was also a lot of racism. There was an adopt-a-highway sign near my school that listed the adopters as "kappa kappa kappa." That's not a college fraternity.

Yeah like others said the southbend area really is not bad but it varies from town to town In northern Indiana.Im in Chesterton right now which is pretty much an all white old fashioned town yet im only about 10 miles from Gary,the crime capitol of the USA.My first place I ever rented was a nice 3 bedroom house with 2 car garage in Gary for $400 a month lol, it was close to my job at the time.

The Klan is around these parts. But as Curly said earlier in this thread its amazing how they are ignored anymore. The closest town to me that is still considered a Klan town is Elwood. I still get the creeps even driving through there and i'm white. I'ts not like it used to be but there are some very very backwoods ignorant people still around but that could be anywhere.

In over 30 years of living here I would say there are more nice and friendly people than ignorant and racist. But it just depends where you are at. Up north isn't bad at all.

I grew up in Indiana and lived there until I was 24. If you go to the Northwest corner, Lake County, you will find a good mix of races. However, and I say this bluntly, many of the black people in that region are the stereotypical N word. Lake County has very high pollution and taxes, too, so I wouldn't recommend there.

Any small towns... you won't be welcome. Probably the places you'll feel most welcome would be college towns/cities, such as Muncie, Lafayette, and Bloomington. Indianapolis may be a good idea, too.

Honestly, just leave Indiana. It sucks. I moved to Phoenix last year and have no plans to move back to Indiana.

South Bend is not bad at all.

Try to avoid the south side and west side. While you are there make a stop at Notre Dame just to check out the campus and stadium.

Also if you are going to be eating dinner there and like Italian I highly recommend Parisi's. It is across the street from ND and has excellent food.

I wouldn't worry, Arkitech. To say that there is no racism would be a lie, but for the most part it's in the older generations. My grandparents are a prime example. The vast majority of people under the age of 50 are cool.

In some places in southern indiana you still have those signs "this school/road was made possible by a donation from the KKK." Generally the further north you go the better it gets.
