once again I was asked if I'd like to take this position in london that would require for me to be there 6 to 9 months. it'll be good experience and i'd love to go back to europe for a little while.

so I have some questions to those of you who live there...where are some nice affordable places around london. how expensive is rent out there? how's the commute? would i need a car all the time? and of course, how hot are the chicks?

I lived there for 4 months and my experience was that you definitely do not need a car. Their public transportation system is quite good, and you can get to pretty much anywhere in Europe quite easily via plane or train.

Don't get a car. Just find an apartment near a tube stop that won't take too many transfers to get to your final destination.

No cars, very limited street parking. ... its quite expensive out there.. depending on where you work.. My office is off Saville row, in between oxford st and piccadilly.. its all shops there.. just like NYC..

rains often.. not very cold.. i like it there..

star bucks every other corner, i ate out of those little sandwich shops quite often... nice and quick..

If your in a London Underground zone you won't need a car.

Prices are £210 a week for an okay 2bed place, bathroom + toilet, living room and kitchen. You will be 15-20mins from central London via bus or tube. Canada Water is has some nice places. My mates lives there. You will get A LOT LESS room for your £££ though! London is the 2nd most expensive City in the world to live in, only after Tokyo btw.

If you live further out from central you can commute up to 45-60minutes.

Where abouts will your offices be? Lots of hot girls about in central or anywhere imo.

I live in Woking, which is 30mins from central London via trains (overground).

OK you've raised quite a few questions.

By 'London' I'm assuming you mean central London. You won't be able to afford renting in the centre unless you're being paid megabucks. The commute isn't too bad. There is a motorway that goes around London (the M25) - basically anywhere inside this motorway is fairly costly to live in.

For example, Croydon is due south of London, and its about 13 miles from the centre. You can get a train from East Croydon (main station) to London Victoria (main station on the south of the centre) and it takes around 25 - 30 mins.

However, because of this, Croydon isn't a cheap place to live.. This also applies to everywhere else that is in reasonable commuting distance.

Using Croydon as an example - What you'll probably end up doing is getting somewhere that is affordable close to Croydon. This'll involve a short bus ride to Croydon and then the train to London. If you're lucky then you can live close to the main train line that goes through Croydon, so you wouldn't need to change.

Re: Car - if you're working in central London you'll never need a car for work. You might want a car at the weekends, but it depends where you want to go. Public transport can be a bit variable, but at least it exists here. You can get pretty much anywhere with public transport.

Chicks are ok... There are some stunners and some complete mingers (slang).

Let me know if you want any more info.

Canada Water is for you then.

You could probably get a one bed place for £180 or so.

Yeah that's a decent area. I remember walking around it some when I was in London over the summer. Lots of cool new buildings at Canary Wharf. From Canada Water you only have to take the Jubilee Line one stop to get to Canary Wharf so it'll be a short commute. Then if you want to get into town you can take the Jubilee the other direction and connect to just about all the other Tube lines.

I used to live a 30 minute train ride south of London. I would recommend that you rent in a decent area, I would rent a room in a shared house over my own place in a crappy location. That could also benefit you in that you would have some people to hang out with, who could also help you learn the ropes of living there, along with providing advice on good places to vist/eat/shop etc.

I would strongly recommend you do not buy a car. The tube is great, also a good rail network for trips outside the City. If you really needed to you can rent a small car for a trip somewhere.

Make sure you take advantage of the excellent travel deals available - Flights to Europe are incredibly cheap. You could take several long weekends and visit other European cities.

You will have a great time!
