Some of my friends have flashbacks of the events that happened, and they didn't serve in the military.

Wat do you think? Can people really have flashbacks from an event they saw on Television?

I don't think PTSD is bullshit. I think PTSD is very often lied about and used as a bullshit excuse, but I think it is a real condition. From watching TV? I find that to have nothing to do with what causes PTSD. Example:

You are sitting at home, just finished setting the table for dinner and are waiting for your wife and baby boy to come home to eat what you cooked for them. You get a phone call and expect it to be your wife, but instead its someone from the CHP who has just notified you that your wife and son were both killed on their way home, not by a car accident, but murdered in a car jacking. Their bodies left in the street and witnesses said they heard your boy crying for his daddy before he fell silent.
This will cause PTSD in some people. It can lead to acute anxiety, acute phobia of everything from eating dinner to telephones.
The condition is caused by mental trauma. How that trauma takes place is irrelevant.

I can believe that some people are actually fragile and sheltered enough to suffer a psychological condition from a traumatic event that most of us would be able to get over much more readily.

So, no, no PTSD for me.

I would agree with Moodbog that it does exist, but is probably overly diagnosed.

I agree. If you're in the military and have someone blown up next to you then I have no doubt that PTSD is real. If you claim you got it from watching TV coverage of 9/11 then you're full of shit.

Yeah, I agree about the 9-11 TV thing, with the rare exception that perhaps you knew your family was in those buildings at the time of collpase. That could really cause trauma.
Can't comment on the war scenario. I'm just grateful for those who are willing to do what i'm too scared to do.

No, PTSD is NOT bullshit...it's a very real thing.

Yes, it's what was called shell-shock until about Vietnam.

No, IMO, you cannot get PTSD from seeing things on television...unless you're VERY weak minded. (and basically talk yourself into being traumatized.)
