I got into a motorcycle accident a week ago. Had a Stage 3 concussion where I lost consciousness. I've probably got BPPV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benign_paroxysmal_positional_vertigo) and some memory focus issues. I feel like I've been operating in a fog for the past week and have a harder time focusing on tasks. I feel like I'm not as aware of my surroundings as I should be. And balance isn't completely back when I walk around - I tend to want to list towards the right a little bit and sometimes have a hard time standing still due to balance (probably a result of the BPPV). With the BPPV, if I tilt my head at a certain angle I can go on a super wild vertigo ride.

Can anyone give me some advice on how you guys did with a similar concussion? How long did it take for you to feel back to normal, to get out of the fog and dizziness? To get back your sharp short term memory?

Get to a neurologist asap. Had the same thing happen to me about 5 years ago. Fell off a truck onto my melon and got knocked out. Had the same issues, the fog, the disorientation and ringing in my ears. The ringing lasted almost a year and was the worst part. I also could not name things. I knew what they were, but could not say what they were. The neurologist prescribed Lexapro(antidepressant) to me and said when you get a cocussion, your seratonin levels bottom out, causing the fog and disoroientation, lack of sleep, etc. Within a few days I felt a whole lot better. Hope this helps. Good luck man, it sucks, but will get better.

Peace

Thanks! Luckily I do NOT have the ringing in my ears. MRI came back normal (they scanned me in the ER). I can still name things. It's just a general fogginess that I'm feeling. I'm getting plenty of sleep (like 10 hours+ a day, lol). But I guess I should get a follow up appointment, huh?

Was the bike OK? Pics?

Seriously, there is a lot of talking about concussions lately. You should be able to find a lot of information on the net.

Good luck

PS: Get a car.

Go see a neurologist. ER docs are great at what they do, but they're basically there to stop you from dying when you're otherwise on your way out. Have the MRI sent to the neurologist too.

I feel like we need a link to the thread where fbb said he was getting a motorcycle and people gave him less than a year until he crashed it.

I had a catastrophic accident in 1996 that cracked my skull all the way through my dura, ended up in a medically induced coma for a very long time, it took about 20 hours of brain surgery to extract all of the skull fragments from the brain tissue, and I'm still prone to immense headaches, memory loss, slurred speech, and difficulty in coordination from time to time. It seems to get worse with age.

This is true. You'll never fully recover and it'll only get worse as the years go by. The only thing you could've done was preventing it from happening in the 1st place.

FBB, with all due respect, you shouldn't be riding a bike.

Sorry your insurance sucks so hard, drink plenty of fluids and take multivitamins and be sure to get some exercise, even simple walking is fine.

Just thank your stars it wasn't worse. When I had my crash (riding back from teaching an advanced MSF) I broke my humerus (compound) 7 ribs, and collapsed my left lung.

I was out of commission for 6 weeks, and a year before I felt good again. A physical therapist looked at me recently and mentioned I am now profoundly right handed as a result of the muscle, tissue and nerve damage. I used to be ambidextrous.

Count your blessings, dust yourself off and move on without a motorcycle.

Do these times occur after you visit a bar because if so I have the exact same thing.

Chris? I know a guy same thing happened '96. I know you're a Texan too. Probably coincidence but never know

Luckily I got out of biking before something like this or worse happened to me. I wrecked but I walked away, sore and scraped up but I walked away. Sold the bike a few months later. Just didn't feel right anymore.

Pretty sure I did playing football back in high school. Back then you just had to deny getting knocked out so you could go back in.

I was treated by watching it on the game film on monday and laughing at me looking like I was dunk when I tried to get up.

Knocked out cold. Managed to get up, stagger into my dorm room, and thump, face first into my bed. I lost names. I couldn't remember people's names. Before the accident, I quickly learned new names. Couldn't remember my girlfriend's name. (I thought it was kind of funny during an intimate moment when I realized I couldn't remember her name.) In hindsight, I probably should have seen someone other than the university's version of first aid care. To this day, I have a lot of trouble with people's names - I can't attach them to faces. If two students switch seats, and I don't hesitate to think about it, I'll call them by the wrong name. Occasionally, I'll call kids by the name of the person who sat in that seat the same class period, but a year ago.

It was a few weeks after the concussion before I was back to "normal." Time was the only thing to heal me, except for name ability.

Was out for 3 hours from a nasty car wreck. Who knows what kind of damage was done.

My housemate got a severe concussion a couple years ago - fell while cross-country skiing and bumper her head on a rock. She didn't lose consciousness but she started acting loopy and her friend brought her to the ER. She has a nice several hour blank spot in her memory.

As far as recovery goes, she was about 80-90% after a month or so, and back in fighting trim after about three months. Most of her difficulty was with cognitive stuff.

a hard concussion is BRAIN DAMAGE. It doesnt matter if your MRI came back okay, MRIs only have a certain resolution, and beyond obvious trauma cannot detect damage at the cellular level.

If you receive another concussion while you are trying to recover from this one, you are going to be so fucking screwed. You should ditch your bike.

And wear a helmet if you aren't already.
