My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a house (if the banks ever get their ass moving) and being that this will be our first house, we are very excited. My wife has been constantly looking at sites online and watching HGTV for decorating ideas. She's got it all figured out, bedroom, kitchen, living room. They are all hers. That's alright though, as I negotiated a mancave for myself. I get the garage... all of it.

Now I'm trying to figure out exactly what I want to put in there. Some ideas I have so far.

1. Floor painted with a giant Dallas Cowboys star!!!!
2. I think I want a really big wall mounted HD projector. I've seen others do this, but not sure how expensive or how hard it is to do. Anyone know?
3. We've inherited a really nice pool table. I think this will be the perfect place for it (not much room in the house I don't think).
4. Surround sound system, obviously.
5. Mini-fridge, gotta have that.

What else?

Does my roommate's tweaker cave in the garage count?
In my mind's eye it looks a lot different than it does now.

Garages make terrible mancaves. No insulation, no place to park your car. Renegotiate for the basement if you have one!

Eh... dunno how you reach that conclusion. Guess you don't have one, homophob.

No basement, Florida

It is going to be very hot in the summer in there, so I have to figure something out with a shit ton of fans. I'm also thinking about some way to have a screen cover for the garage opening rather than having the door down all the time. It'd be really cool and nice in the evening. A nice 75 with a breeze

Yep, the garage is all yours. Heard that before. Now half of it is filled with the crap she didn't want in her rooms.

I hate HGTV so much. Give me This Old House and Ask This Old House, and keep that superficial crap they do to houses on other home shows.

I'm not sure a garage is the ideal place to watch TV, but whatever floats your boat. I have a TV in my garage, but just a 19" to keep me occupied while I'm in there doing other stuff. I wouldn't go in my garage specifically to watch TV.

Painting the ceiling and walls goes a long way to making a garage look nicer. I didn't bother making the drywall joints look nice, because I don't think it's worth the effort for garage walls that are going to get beat up. I just primed and painted, and I don't care if I can see the edges of the tape and what have you. We're redoing our kitchen, so I took the old crappy cabinets that were in there before and painted them black. I got a 12 ft (or 10 ft?) length of countertop at Lowe's and put it on top of the base cabinets (which have a gap underneath so I could sit at it like a desk with a stool). I got the floors done with the epoxy and sand. I think the sand looks nicer than the flakes, and it seems like it'd give you a better non-slip surface. I think it looks pretty good so far, though it's not yet in a condition where I could take good pictures (and it's also filled with crap since we're currently renovating the first floor of the house).

Oh yeah, you need a fridge - at least a mini-fridge - for beer. Edit: I see you already have that covered

I have a man cave in my garage. Love it. Poker table, stereo, foosball, darts, putting green thing. I dont have a TV there, because i have an HD projector and 100" screen in the house.

THe problem, as i see it, with the projector in the man cave is that the room needs to be really dark, and you dont want to just watch movies out there. Its a man cave to share with buddies so ya'll will be playing pool or something and you will want to have the lights on, so i would go with a wall mounted LCD or something instead.

Good point grant, wall mounted LCD may be a better idea. I also like the idea of the putting green

My whole house is a man cave... of course anytime I can convince a woman to come over they say "its a nice place, but could use a woman's touch"... But so could I ... ;( anyhow
1. I would say this is tougher idea, since when you walk on it, it will get scuffed and the like. You can put a clear coat on it to keep it from flaking off, but even a clear coat will eventually get taken apart by dragging chairs, etc. You could do it, but keep in mind it would have ot have touch ups every so often.
2. I have a HD projector older unit that handled 1080i, and it does well. I used a standard ceiling mount though, and connected all the possible connectors on the back, to a panel in the wall. For the wiring, I went to www.cablesforless.com. They have bulk cabling and all the weird sizes and lengths you could think of as well as the wall plates and just about anything you would need to hide cables.
For my screen, I first turned on the projector to see how large the image I wanted, then while it was on, (be sure you are displaying an actual image from your media, since sometimes, the screen size changes depnding on the resolution) I traced it out then painted it with something called Screen Goo. It is a slightly refelctive paint, similar to the reflectiveness of a standard projector. The paint was about $200 and the misc. cabling and heads and tubing were about antoher $500. You could easily just buy a single HDMI cable though for like a hundred bucks. My particular one is 33 feet and was $128, but they have longer and shorter lengths. In retrospect, I think I will still mount a wall pull down/motorized screen, since they are not very expensive (well, pulldowns at least) and when not on, they can be rolled up, exposing a picture or painting or mural or something. Right now I just have this odd semi gray white rectangle on it. People think I didn't finish painting.
I hired a guy to mount the projector mount, but after I saw what he did, I could have saved myself the $100 doing it myself. he just bolted it to the rafters after he found them with a stud finder.
3. That is what man caves are for! I vote yes on this idea.
4. This one is a little tougher, since I haven't done a full one. I bought a Sony that simulates it with a sound bar, a left and right, and also a sub. It works ok, but some movies it doesn't simulate. You can't really tell or pinpoint what it is, but you can still tell. I would rate is a 90% on accuracy, though I am no audiophile. I am sure a more sensitive ear can hear the difference (i can barely tell the difference between a high quality MP3 and a CD, people swear there is a huge one, but I can't really hear it).
5. Mini-fridge. I got a small one that holds my beers. I was thinking of a kegerator, but just don't drink enough to warrant that. I settled on pony kegs or heineken's draught keg. In my particular set up, it is a "leg" of a table that serves as my "bar". The other side is a wine celler that is the same size as the other mini-fridge. It is just enough to keep things cool, but not cold. Like 60 degrees. The bar itself is just a peice of stained plywood with a 1x1 piece of wood glued and bolted to the front edge to keep it from flexing when weight is put to it.

Either way, good luck, I think the home theatre one is the hardest and most expensive. I saw one guy on the web put a plasma TV in a wood cabinet he built himself. Then he attached a 1 way mirrow over the front of it, so when the TV is off and the lights are on, it looks like a normal wet bar with mirror. Turn off lights and turn on TV you get a mostly normal TV. I thought that was neat, but I don't know how to build a cabinet that woud look nice enough. Also, I wanted the big 62" type screen size, so I went with projector. Also another thing about the projector route that I never thought of before I actually did it, was my particular projcctor has a loud fan. I don't hear it during normal movies, but with quiet scenes, it is a little annoying. I didn't notice it at all while at Fry's, or even when I painted out my screen. Since the projector is right over where we sit, it is hard to get away from it.

In addition to the things on your list, here are some things I would put in my man cave. Note: my ideal man cave would be in a basement and not a garage, so some of these things might not work if you're planning to park your car in it.

1) Manly art, like a bear skin or some antlers, maybe even a suitable manly painting or print.

2) One of those old wooden coat hanger/hat stands.

3) Floor lamp in addition to a manly desk lamp (possibly one of those ones with the green glass shade above the bulb). No fluorescent bulbs.

4) Old leather furniture, something along the lines of a recliner and a small couch.

5) Coffee table to go in front of said furniture plus an end table to go on the side.

All I really want to be able to do in my cave is to watch football/baseball, drink, and nap. Between the Super Bowl and spring training I will mostly do the latter two, or hibernating, as I like to call it.

My brother has a great mancave.
He built a building behind his house that is about 50 feet x 24 feet. contains a 2 car garage and a separate room.
The whole space has a wood stove for the winter, AC for the summer. Gas stove, stainless steel counters and sink, fridge and microwave, pool table, TV, stereo, bar, and a bathroom. It is like a mini house attached to a 2 car garage full of tools.

All has a concrete floor. He built it when he was a really bad drunk so he could go out there and drink till he passed out without his wife nagging him. She wouldn't let him come in the house drunk

Turin, in the driveway. I don't think we'd use the garage for cars anyway. It's a pain in the ass putting two cars in there, cause then you're right up against the wall when you're trying to get out and if I'm going to leave one car in the driveway, mine as well leave them both there and use the space for something fun.

Can't help with the cooling part, but if it ever gets cold, a wood stove is cheap and can heat a space up so hot you have to take your shirt off !

i'm trying to orient my garage into a man cave..

has fridge, ceiling fan already. there's a window for a wall A/C unit for the future.

I have a cheapie projector that will do for now. I have an ethernet connection + PC on 1 side and a stereo on the other.

Also, I'm almost done with my touchscreen mp3 jukebox that will be primarily located there (but it's portable, so I can put it in the house to use it there).

If it ever gets cold in Florida I'll just put on a hoodie, thanks for the suggestion though
