I think I have about 1000 records and I really need to
figure out a better way to store them...
Right now they are mostly in milk crates but they take up
too much floor space...
I guess I need to make a big bookcase with several shelves and store them in rows
but thry're so hard to find that way .. you can barely read the spines.
I like flipping through them and seeing the cover better, but can't think of
a space efficient way of doing that.
Anyways, anyone have tips and also the best way to make a shelf
if I go that way?

He's talking about vinyls.

No, I don't have any vinyls. But I store my CDs and DVDs in multiples of these.

BTW, OP, check these shelves out. Made just for vinyls.

I use a big bookcase. I keep them in alphabetical order by composer/artist and then in numerical order by release date, with compilations at the end of the section for that artist. That way they're easy to find, even if you can't see the front cover without pulling it out.

ours are in block and board shelving.. still.. after all these years.. rofl. in this same sort of order, alpha by composer/artist.. but I think they're also alpha by title, I haven't really looked lately.. things in there have gotten so complicated in there I can't figure out how to make one play anymore.. every now and then I ask my husband to make a switches map for me, this makes the vinyl play, this makes the cassettes play, this makes radio, this makes the sound for the tv, this makes the cd's play..

but it hasn't happened.

yeah.. I listen to them every day and constanlty adding to the collection

Those and my MP3's are 99.9% of my music collection
I have maybe 40 cds tops and like two tapes

I store most of mine in mail bins. The large grey boxes with two intermeshing tops that fold out.

I built a bookshelf type thing a while back, but it eventually broke due to some drunken messes.
Thoes grey metal open storage shelves work fairly good too, better if you can adjust the gap between shelves.

eeeek! Archive them to CD or DVD-A immediately! Every time you play a record you're slowly destroying it. I have a great simulator of this and when you hear the difference it will make you cry.

Most of them were made before I was born and they sound OK to me.

If I want a digital copy .. I'll just borrow a CD and rip it or download
quality MP3s

The best system Ihave seen is heavey duty metal frame shelving, like light weight version of what Home Depot uses. Keep the LP's in the milk crates and put the crates on the shelf.

As far as record wear, if you have a good turntable, tone arm and cartridge than wear will not be a huge issue. Granted, you will have to spend some $$$ to get a good setup, like maybe $600+, but hey, it will should better than anything else.(Though SACD is close) A friend has a Linn turn table, with a tweeked power supply, I am not sure of the cartridge and tonearm, but a setup like his would run a easy $3000.
