I've always had a huge fascination with aircraft growing up and I'm currently planning to go back to college.

I originally planned to go for a Computer Science degree but I'm a little curious about the Aerospace Engineering degree now.

Anyone here have one of these degrees or work in this field?

Dumb questions incoming -

How old are you?
Are you applying for mature student?
Have you made your personal statement?
Have you checked all the Uni requirements? Both degrees you stated are quite competitive, so please make sure you have the right qualifications.
Are you studying in the US/UK?

You will defiantly better off with an Aerospace Engineering degree if your main interest is aircraft (engineering)

If you like coding, programming, Continuous Maths, linear algebra and Computer graphics etc, then Computer science is the right option. Computer science is the BEST degree if you are into those things I stated.

Also, please go and visit, www.UCAS.COM or www.studentroom.co.uk.

If you need help apply etc, pm me. I can help

I'm an aero engineer and I think you'd better off with a mechE degree working in the aero field. It's a lot easier to get a job in aero with a mech degree than a job outside aero with an aero degree.

There are quite a few of us around here.. I work in the field and I'm still finishing my degree, hopefully I can answer any questions you may have..

Never really taken any physics courses before. My wife just graduated with an Applied Physics degree and some of the things she talked about were interesting though.

What does she do with a degree in Applied Physics?

Just curious why she did not get an Engineering degree.

I've heard they often don't end up working on actual flying things.

You better like physics.

They didn't have an official engineering degree at the university she attended. Most of the people she graduated with applied for masters programs at other universities to become engineers. More than likely she will have to do the same but will have to wait until next year due to missing the deadlines.

She loved her classes but regrets getting a degree in Applied Physics.

Yeah, that's kind of the reason I was asking. I have a nephew who got an Applied Physics degree a couple of years ago. He's still trying to figure out what he's going to do now as he has not been able to find a job.

Ya it's pretty depressing. She is currently working at an accounting firm making $30k and I plan on going back full time this Fall.

I told her we should look into her registering as a full time student as well and go ahead and get a CS degree since she only needs a years worth of classes. I'm not sure if we would be awarded enough financial aid to support us though.

Suggest you look at the type of classes you would be required to take and if that's what you want to do. I started college with the plan for a dual degree, MechE and Aero, but by the second year the load was too much and I switched to just MechE but kept my concentration in Aero.

Example of classes

I have an aerospace engineering degree.

The job market isn't as bad as some may suggest, but you are limited to the places you can live. See where the jobs are before you commit.

Computer engineering are a lot more broad and you have a lot more job options. Not saying that's a reason to chose it if aerospace is what you want, but if you are 50/50 one way or the other I'd suggest strongly considering the more broad applicability of a compute engineering degree.

If you have the inclination to do computer engineering with some aero electives that could be cool. As more and more drones are deployed there will be a growing demand for people who understand flight and how to program computer software.

Good luck.

Ya this is exactly what I was thinking. Most of the aerospace companies like Lockheed Martin are in larger cities like the Dallas area from my understanding. I figure with a CS degree I'd have a better chance finding a job in smaller towns if I'd like.

Ah, see, you've got your mind set like most of the people I go to school with. Everyone in my program seems to think that Boeing, Lockheed, and the big guys are the ONLY place to work, when in reality there are a ton more options than that, you just have to look.

I'd strongly consider a Computer Engineering degree over a CS degree. I may be slanted on this because my CE friends knock CS people. But I would think a CE degree plus some aero classes would be worth considering.

As for jobs, there are concentrations of them in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area, Seattle, Wichita, KS and then a few other places.

I got a CS degree about a decade ago, and it's been fine but I sometimes think I should have done CE instead.

A word of caution: Talking about physics concepts and doing the math required for an engineering degree are two different things. Do you like math? There may be a lot of it.
