eh? i remember something about mensa back in 7th grade. it was pretty pointless- you get some stupid award and a bunch of snotty kids think they're all high and mighty. You get in based on your score relative to the rest of your age group, so it gets harder to qualify the older you are.

Serial killers are often very intelligent and high methodical, exactly the kind of people that are in MENSA. Personally I think MENSA is like a country club for intelligent people, it's a group to belong to that allows you to feel superior to those who can't get in.

If smart people REALLY want to be productive, how about inventing cold fusion or something like smart people back in the day?

Because your spelling of "notorious" angers them.

I'm about ten points short If I can't handle stupid people, those much more intelligent than me must be driven absolutely bugsh*t by them on a daily basis. It's not surprising some snap.

I was in Mensa for a while. It was a nice waste of $40/yr. It was mostly filled with elitists, at least from what I could tell.

I got out of it after a few years.

I don't need to self-inflate my ego and I don't want to hang out with pretentious pricks, so no, I'm not in MENSA.

Same, I joined just before starting college but haven't paid the annual dues for over a decade now. Pre-internet the lists of special interest groups, newsletters, etc. seemed mildly interesting but I never got around to attending any of the get-togethers to meet fellow S-M-R-T people.

Despite the portrayal on TV shows, you don't need to speak esperanto (at even the Arnold Rimmer level) to join, and you also don't need to be a "genius." You just need to score at or above the 98th percentile on a standardized IQ test.

You sure? I was under the impression a 150 IQ was required. Joining never much interested me (though I wouldn't mind knowing I could if I wanted to) and so I never looked into it.

I think it's 138 composite or 150 verbal. It's been a while since I messed with Mensa though.

Take all of the snotty, insecure, know-it-all...

Ok, just take all of ATOT, give them a piece of paper saying that they're better than everyone else, charge $40, and you have Mensa.

From www.Mensa.org:

"How do I qualify for Mensa?

Membership in Mensa is open to persons who have attained a score within the upper two percent of the general population on an approved intelligence test that has been properly administered and supervised. There is no other qualification or disqualification for membership eligibility.

The term "IQ score" is widely used but poorly defined. There are a large number of tests with different scales. The result on one test of 132 can be the same as a score 148 on another test. Some intelligence tests don't use IQ scores at all. Mensa has set a percentile as cutoff to avoid this confusion. Candidates for membership in Mensa must achieve a score at or above the 98th percentile (a score that is greater than or equal to 98 percent of the general population taking the test) on a standard test of intelligence. I was for awhile.

They all kinda pissed me off, though. It wasn't that they were elitists, but it seemed like all they wanted to do was pass around brain teasers and other masturbatory activities to prove how smart they are.

I dunno... I think if you have a room full of smart people, you should try and use your intelligence for something productive, not debating the merits and flaws of the different IQ tests.

I'm pretty sure I could get in without much of a problem, but I fail to see the point. I havent heard of any MENSA activities that interest me. If I wanted to join a circle-jerk society, it would be one with a better male to female ratio.
