I don't think the legion is like it used to be. They won't take felons and such.

but if you want to learn french, get citizenship. get in shape and maybe get killed, probably worth a shot.

ummm no. the FFL are hardcore and do not surrender.

of all the military units in the world the FFL is in my top 5 list of units to be feared and respected on a battle field. I have known one guy who was in the FFL and the training they go through is brutal, their stations they can be sent to are the absolute sh*t holes of the world. Plus you are French property and they put a whole new meaning of owning your ass during your whole enlistment contact. Oh you better like to run, they run marathons just for fun.

Read the book, The French Foreign Legion by Douglas Porch for a good history. Long but very detailed and quite fascinating.

Sorry for the bump.

I told my parents that I'm going to try to join, they were very upset/displeased. Obviously my friends are nonsupporting, but it doesn't bother me. I probably shouldn't have told anyone but I would not want to put my friends/family in that position. I'm 17 now, and I am saving up to get an airline ticket and passport. Also trying to learn French(pointers welcome). I don't know why I resolve to posting this here, but I suppose it's a good way to vent.

I don't know you, so I can't say it's right or wrong for you to join. I will, however, wish you the best and I will keep you in my prayers.

No, never considered joining, but I did give thought to joining the Army (U.S.) when I was 18. Not a serious amount of consideration, but it was one of my options.

Good luck man, I remember watching a video on the legion running on the military channel (should still be running). The jungle and desert training look hardcore.
