My wife has really gotten into running. 5K, 10K, stuff like that. She's pushing me to do the same. I used to run in high school after getting kicked off the baseball team. I support her running because it's healthy and cheap (just need sneakers and the open road) but I cannot do it myself. I only ran sprints, not long distance and I get bored quickly. Now she's saying I'm weak and soft and a whole lot of other nonsense. But I have little interest in running long distances. There is no motivation.

What I'm trying to ask is, how do long distance runners keep up the concentration? I've tried focusing on breathing but the slightest annoyances bother me (like smelly air). Also, music comes and go in 4 minutes spurts and can also prove to be a distraction. Anyone ever gone from sprinting to long distance?

I used to walk and ride my bike for many hours a day, I used my iPod and just blasted some good music, otherwise it would be hard for me to stick with it.

Once you are in the groove it becomes fun to run around or ride your bike, but every so often you have to stop to change the songs.

Get longer music. I have a few 20+ minute songs that are great for 5Ks. I set mental notes of where on the route I should be at the very least at certain point in the song.

I enjoy running in unique places. If you see the same stuff over and over it gets boring which is why I can't do the treadmill. Try to find trails to run. My favorite place to run is on the deck of a cruiseship.

Once you've reached a certain point with running, you start to feel invincible.

It can be hard work getting there though.

Where are those? I think something like that would help tremendously.

I always wanted to run while listening to music.

Though, it does make it harder to be aware of your surroundings.

Running used to be boring for me too, I always had music on. Then I got married and had kids and now the 45 minutes of alone time are much more enjoyable.

Same here. Treadmills and running on a track circle is utterly boring, even with music. Running on trails or interesting roads is very enjoyable.

Running's great. Keep trying. I haven't run for a year or so but when I did, I had no music. I find it to be distraction because things get confusing when one song ends and another starts. I sort of kept my own rythm by regular breathing.
