Anyone here knows a PSU power consumption calculator that is pretty accurate? coz I got a 650watts Rosewill Hive with 8350 and 7950 and somehow I feel like im on the edge here, I used neweggs calculator and it says I should be around 540watts with the major components and with all my other fans and stuff I expect to be at barely 600watts.

Me.

You're not even near the edge. Assuming your PC is not overclocked

CPU = about 100W
7950 = 180W
The rest <100W in the worst case scenario

You could run this off of a 500W unit easily. With no overclocking and using Molex-PCIe adapters, your Hive could just about run 7950 Crossfire (about 500W max. +12V load, PSU's +12V rail rated for 552W continuous)

If you want to find out exactly how much you're using power, buy a Kill-A-Watt, then adjust the wattage reading for your PSU's efficiency (85%).

100W is a pretty low (unrealistic) estimate for that CPU. Under full load, it exceeds the 125W TDP, at least if IDC's thread about it in the CPU forum is accurate.

I think it depends largely on what you load it with. In gaming, it should not go above TDP, 100W should be realistic for heavy gaming. In any case, the PSU is more than powerful enough.

That calculator should be taken with a grain of salt, it (like most PSU calculators) overestimates the total amount of wattage needed. Find the rough estimate and take away about 50 - 100W (depending on the system) to find a more accurate power requirment.

As for your current system, it should be fine even with heavy OCing.

EDIT - The calculator recommends a 1450w unit for my system, and claims I need at least 1400w for the thing to turn on. I am running a 1275w PSU for my system and dont think I am anywhere near the threshold, even with everything max OC'd.

For things like drives you probably use more power at startup when the drives initially power up. Also keep in mind that even though a power supply says 650 watts you may not be able to get good use at above 80% capacity. Why dont you just get one of those watt usage meters that goes between the wall and the power cord. Measure it yourself.

Take a look at some of these picutes they are using a Kill-A-Watt Meter.

Maybe buy one of those.

I have read some articles on things like TDP which deals with the watt rating on processors. The processors have a rating but it is for a wide range of processors. They normally run well below that rating. Engineers tend to overestimate power ratings to add in a margin of error for safety.

If having a meter to monitor your power usage gives you peace of mind, It might be worth the investment.

^ It is the same calculator as the extreme.outervision.com posted by smoblikat.
