Living in Anchorage, AK for the last 7 years. Moved up here from SoCal. Love it so much I finally decided to buy a house/condo. Hopefully, I close next month, so I guess up here for the long haul.
Winters are definitely cold, but I'm used to it now. I discovered it's a lot easier to stay warm than it is to keep cool. Coldest I've seen it here in Anchorage is -19 Fahrenheit. The long nights can take some getting used to in the winter.
Summers are short though, but having the daylight hours lasting maybe 22 hours or so, gives you plenty of time to do all kinds of stuff during the day. Hottest I've ever seen it in Anchorage is probably low 80's. Most times, it's in the upper 60 - mid 70's.
Living up here isn't much different than living in the lower 48. Got malls, restaurants, bars, movies, etc. Maybe not as much variety, but you always have amazon.
