I only saw the original movies a few years ago and even though they were good, I think most of the popularity is due to the nostalgia factor.

Have you watched other movies from the 70s? Most of them are boring and artsy. Star Wars started the trend of having a movie be action packed from start to finish. Every modern blockbuster follows that format, even movies based on boring and artsy books like Lord of the Rings.

I'm a Star Wars fan.

I don't give two shits about the new cash grab... I mean movie.
That's like thinking girls are hot, but hating bikinis. What kind of fuckery do you live in?
I bet you have random shit in your house that makes zero sense, just like your post.

I know I do. I have a plaster alien skull that's wearing a chain mail coif, and a white derby hat.
But I'm not frothing at the mouth about a new Star Wars, I expect I'll watch it when I can get it from Redbox or the library or something. It's also plausible that the reception of the film may cause me to re-assess this stance.

PS: I have cats, too.

So we can blame Star Wars for that? Another reason to avoid this reboot then.

Considering 4 of the top 10 worldwide grossing movies came this year I don't think they're far off.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films

The 80's was so good for movies:

1980 - Empire Strikes Back
1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982 - ET
1983 - Return of the Jedi
1984 - Temple of Doom
1985 - Back to the Future
1986 - Top Gun
1987 - Fatal Attraction
1988 - Rain Man
1989 - Last Crusade

All of these are great except for Fatal Attraction. Which was still pretty good. Compared to the last ten years:

2005 - Another Harry Potter
2006 - Another Pirates of the Caribbean
2007 - Yet Another Pirates of the Caribbean.
2008 - Dark Knight
2009 - Avatar
2010 - Toy Story 3
2011 - Yet Another Harry Potter
2012 - Avengers
2013 - Frozen
2014 - Another Transformers

Avengers and Avatar were the only ones that were actually great. Dark Knight and TS3 were good. Frozen can DIAF because my daughter wouldn't shut up with that song for freaking ever.

Frozen is a good story at least.

Disney almost killed itself running its properties into the ground by bean counters for decades after Walt's death. Other than a small renaissance from Little Mermaid to Lion King, their animation department was only able to produce crap and sequels of crap and Disney looked elsewhere for profits. Then after they acquire Pixar a man who they fired years prior for pushing the company into computer animation before anyone but Steve Jobs was ready took over Disney animation and helped to developed a "Snow Queen" fairy tale (that Disney himself could never crack while he was alive) into the biggest success in the history of Disney animation.

I mean the movie itself sucks, but the story behind it would make a great movie.

I remember being disappointed in an ex when she told me she didnt see Star Wars in the theaters, nevermind that she wasnt born until that year. Never looked at her the same. Cant imagine someone not seeing it at all. Even bushman that worship Coke bottles must have seen it at least once.

The funny thing is, by today's standards the original Star Wars is kind of boring as well. I fired up Star Wars for my daughter about a year ago after having watched the first Star Trek reboot the night before and she was bored to tears. Even though I love the movie I had to admit there are LONG stretches of not much happening. They just don't make movies the same way they used to (generally for the worse).

Missed some big ones.

1982 Blade Runner
1982 First Blood (Rambo)
1984 Ghostbusters
1984 The Karate Kid
1984 The Terminator
1986 Aliens
1986 Little Shop of Horrors
1987 Predator
1987 The Princess Bride
1989 Batman

Not sure where Pee Wee / Beetlejuice and other Tim Burton movies fit in.

One of my favorites from the decade wasn't exactly a mega-hit: Blood Simple (1984)

What amazes me is they expect the movie to make 2 BILLION dollars. So basically if it doesn't make more money than Titanic it is a flop.

That's highly amusing because the prequels likely did damage to the brand.
To view this one as not having to prove itself is a considerable amount of hubris from the studio.

I thought revenge of the sith was good.

Very weird experience seeing it in the theater though. We were approached by an employee and he told us (me and my family) that the theater was only licensed to play a specific number of screens at a time but that another screen was playing it but they couldn't sell tickets for it.

So we follow him to a completely empty theater, sit down, it is well past the showing time, we begin to think it's like candid camera or something, and then the screen turns on and the movie plays, no trailers or anything. So we basically got a private viewing for the cost of regular tickets, was really cool.

Now that is a good movie. I've only seen the original Star Wars and that one only once on TV. I was deployed in the Med when the original was released to theaters.

I was referencing the top grossing movies from each year.

And Top Gun is better than Aliens.

Stopped watching Star Wars after that young guy meets that old dude. Too slow! Dumb desert scenes......Not into desert movies.

I MUCH PREFER every Transformer movie. Bay knows how to Direct and keep one's attention while keeping it realistic!

Yeah, I saw it the day it came out in 76 I believe.

My bad, was 77.

Even went back the next day and saw it again, I drug my Grandfather to it.

So wait, you are saying you drugged your grandfather then made him watch Star Wars?
