My youngest kid(12) has been wanting to play board games lately. We have been playing Monopoly, what are some good ones to try? I have been thinking about Ticket To Ride, I have heard good things about that

Stratego is solid.

RISK is fun as long as you get the old version, the new one is a bit ... different.

Chess is good.

Pictionary is great for parties.

We're still in the Candyland/Frozen Candyland ripoff phase in my house. My parents did get my daughter a Monopoly game, but it's different than the original. Something about skyscrapers and a debit card instead of Monopoly money or something like that. We haven't busted it out yet. We are also playing some kind of Disney Trivia game.

Play Axis & Allies with him. Great game, although it could be a little long for a 12 yr old?

I actually (part)own and operate a board game convention.

Yes, I know a few things about them. The thing with board games is that it's a lot like vehicles. There's a ton of different "types" of games, and then within those types, subtypes, and then within that there's a billion different choices.

Ticket to Ride and Dominion are two of the more approachable games. Ticket to Ride is a very easy, fast and casual game. Dominion is a card based deck builder where you essentially are playing solitaire with 4 other people and trying to build up an economy in your hand where you can buy value cards. If he likes superhero themes, then look at the DC Deckbuilder. It's very easy to learn, and plays fast. Carcassonne is another very easy to pick up and play game. It won't set you back much money either and has tons of expansions to keep it fresh.

If he's not competitive and likes to co-op with others, then take a look at Forbidden Island/Desert. They are fast playing, coop games. Pandemic is basically the same mechanic as those two except it's a race against infections instead of sinking islands and you are trying to cure diseases. The choices are a bit more abstract and it's a much more stressful game, but very fun.

Another *very* popular game that can get really agressive/fun for any age is King of Tokyo/New York. Tokyo is cheaper and still very fun.

Also, I'll peddle my wares a bit...but if there's a local board game convention, check it out. They usually have learn to play events where a GM will teach you how to play a particular game. There's also tons of open play events where you can join other players and most of them will teach you how to play the game as it progresses. That way you have a chance to check out games without any real risk of liking them or not.

I could see 5-10 years down the road if Holo Lens or some other type of augmented reality becomes cheap/popular having some cool board game experiences

Cool! I organize a couple meetup groups. One meets at a brewery every couple weeks. We pull in about 30 gamers those nights. Drink beer...play games. Good stuff.

i'm a big fan of board games, monopoly is really outdated and far from where board game design is currently.

i could give you some recommendations based on his likes , what are his interests? fantasy , sci-fi, anime, competitive , story-rpg like games , war games?

ticket to ride is fun , but i cant see myself at 12 liking it that much... rather simple with no theme.

I have not tried a new Risk... But if it is as annoying as the new Monopoly variants,..

I'm an avid board game player with a 12 (actually today is his 13th birthday!) year old. His favorite games in our considerable library is King of Tokyo, Munchkin Apocalypse, Dungeon!, and Flux.

Risk is a great game if you're looking to break him of the idea that board games are a fun activity to engage in. So is Monopoly. I don't recall ever playing either of those games without people wanting to murder each other by the end of it.

Ticket to Ride is a lot of fun, and really easy to get into. I've only played Settlers of Catan once and I was interrupted halfway through; it's clearly more dense than Ticket to Ride, but there's a lot of depth there if you're willing to put the time in. Carcassonne is another fun one. It's more on the casual side as well, really easy to get into, and a lot of fun.

Board game enthusiast here:

Yes ticket to ride.

Yes King of Tokyo.

If he likes animals, get Zooloretto.

If he likes fantasy and has an imagination and likes simple strategy, get the D&D game Lords of Waterdeep.

Get Bang if he wants to play a partyish game with some friends.

Forbidden Desert or Forbidden island for some co-op fun of surviving an island falling into the sea!

Survive, Escape from Atlantis for some take that action.

My kids are much younger and I play simplified version of these games I mentioned. Can't wait for my kids to get older. Play board games with your kids!

My daughter is 12, and she also enjoys Munchkin.

Smashup and Exploding Kittens are two games I will play any day over Munchkin. Similar "Dick your neighbor" sort of games...but no where the table raging...want to shank a bitch sort of shenanigans found in Munchkin.

There's never been any table raging in the many games of Munchkin I've played... YMMV?

pandemic is fucking fun as shit for a game that involves working together instead of having fun crushing everyone else. We have game nights with friends occasionally and play that a lot.
