I second Pandemic or other good coop games. Coop game is much easier to keep kids interested than a competitive game like Dominion, where adults usually wins. Some kids get disinterested quickly when they lose game several times. With coop game, you win as a team or lose as a team and still have fun.

One night we played and lost in each possible way. It was such a disappointing game might.

The first 6 months my wife and I played it, we read the rules wrong. We thought you had to eradicate *EVERYTHING* off the board to win.

We won a few times, but not very often. We thought "Damn this thing is hard to beat!".

Then a friend showed us the rule again and said "Just cure them".

D'oh.

Pictionary
the best.

I remember playing this with my cousins and my sister, at one point my sister was laughing so hard she had to go outside because she couldn't breathe. From laughing. From playing Pictionary.

As odd as this may sound one of my favorite board games of all time is NASCAR Champions and I am not a fan of NASCAR. You get a group of 4-5 friends to play this game and it is a RIOT, you will see make-shift alliances build up & break down along with utter backstabbings throughout a game

while in the military ive seen full out brawl break out over Risk.

To this day I still wonder why we always let one my friends get away with taking Australia every game. We would all be fighting over North American & Europe while he would build a massive army then proceed to take over the world, he was always pink too.

LOL. Taking Australia first was always my tactic as well.

If you want to just spin the spinner and put your brain away, sure.

Nah its more about interacting with your family and having fun instead of focusing on the game. My dad refused to play because he "Played the game of life everyday" so I guess you are like him .

Australia or South America first. Always.

I always end up taking North America and immediately launching attacks because like Russell Crowe I enjoy "Fightin' Around the World". Maybe that is why I can't recall every winning a game

Ah yes, the Australia choke point turtle.

North America is badass though. No one ever wants to commit those kind of resources to taking it. If you keep focusing on it, you can get it while some noob like possessed freak sits in australia the whole game .

I own over 100 board games.

I personally don't enjoy Ticket to Ride, but it would probably be good for a 12 year old.

Other ones I suggest trying:

Settlers of Catan
Carcassonne
Any of the D&D board games (though I vote for Legend of Drizzt)
Dominion

You miss my dig specifically at Life. That game is just a simple roll/spin and move. There are few decisions. There are few interactions. It is basically a brainless activity. There are *much* better family games out there than Life.

Thanks for the Risk attack, yeah, defending 3 access points in NA for a whopping 2 more armies a turn sounds like a great strat. Of course, I much prefer Risk 2210 which is over in 5 turns. You better be attacking quickly or you will be very behind in that game.

[edit]Datalink, you ever go to the compleat strategist?

Serious: It's my dream to play Monopoly with real money. I would need 7 other players with about $1,800 each to match what comes in a traditional Monopoly set. We would play until winner takes all.

This sounds like a good way to get murdered.

ticket to ride, carcassonne, and settlers of catan are good 'next step' board games; after you've worked through monopoly and risk.

if you are looking for low-tech and funny, then Pictophone is an awesome game. all you need is paper and pencils.

i have almost died laughing on numerous occasions playing that game.
