I'm also just learning to play guitar, and I started with Justin Guitar lessons until my course work became prohibitive to practicing much (full time job + ot and full time student). Sounds like I'm a bit farther than you, but really an irrelevant amount. I think it's really a question of what your specific needs are and where you want to end up. Personally, I'm just doing it as a hobby. I might never do anything else than just play by myself, perhaps jam with some friends. Local bar gig is probably the furthest I'd realistically go.
Think about an open mic night at some local venue. They usually have them weekly on a certain day.

I drive past one every day on the way home from work. I'm going to need a fair amount of practice first though . Also, you know, get past the point where the only place I sing is my car when no one else is in it.

I figured I'd post a pic of my stuff, especially since there is a recent addition. I picked up an Chapman ML1 Pro Modern as a bit of a graduation present for myself. I don't know much about evaluating pick ups yet, but it looks great and feels really nice to play. I'm not exactly a shred master though.

I have Rocksmith a to a while back. I think it's good for people who are just starting out but I found it pretty hard and boring playing the songs. YouTube backing tracks gave me that a long time ago.

However the session mode on there I accidentally stumbled into is the coolest shit I've seen in a video game for music. It's a full band(you can pick and choose all the instruments and they a ton) that starts playing when you do. It's creepy accurate and very entertaining. I've used it with a laptop and Bluetooth speaker for some get togdthers.

The interface for it is pretty smooth too. If you have Rocksmith, don't sleep in this mode in the game.

Also, fwiw I bought my USB cable for it off Amazon. Make sure you get a legit one. Some of a bit funky from what I've read. I spent $25.

This is really more of a response for others in the same boat as me.

That mode always seemed cool to me, but I don't really know what to do. I think that's where some at least basic music theory comes into play. I learned a lot of the basic stuff back in middle school, but beyond that I don't know, maybe remember?, much. I honestly don't even remember all of the stuff I learned while playing trumpet back in the day. I could probably slog it out through some books, but I do really want to take lessons. Rocksmith can help build up physical skills and a bit of theory if you're really paying attention to what's going on in the songs. I certainly don't feel like it would hurt to take some lessons to concentrate on theory and eliminating some bad habits.

Also for newer players: the arcade games (my only real experience is in the 2014 edition) are a fun way to practice some of the real basics such as switching strings and moving up and down the fret-board. I recommend saying damn the score and doing the games without looking .

Or an open jam session if there's one in the area, may be an easier way to get your feet wet, and you can learn a lot. We have both acoustic and electric jam sessions here.

Yeah, I witnessed one of those electric jams a few years ago. A variety of local guys got on stage and jammed. I went there with one of those guys who got up there with his electric guitar. He knew most of the guys up there with him. It was in a rural county, he lived there. It's obviously an absolute boon to people who normally practice alone.
