I'm thinking about taking it up again. I used to play.

The cost is prohibative though. What kind do you play, and what brand/model of alto sax do you recommend?

Used to play the clarinet - picked it up agaikn recently, but it busted -

I had to get a few cracks filled on the wood, a bunch of pads replaced, also replaced the cork, and also had to fix one of the valve covers (it broke).

Had it recently fixed - and I'd be damned if it wasn't expensive . . ..

Yeah, I really enjoyed playing the sax. Marching band destroyed that though. I hated marching band with a passion.

Jazz band was ok, but I didn't have the lungs for it (I was 2-4 years younger than everyone else).

I liked marching band - in our school, if you were in the concert band (regardless of which level), you had to be in marching band and pep band . . . I would have continued on with band in college here, since they have a fantastic music program, but scheduling conflicts . . ..

Played tenor sax for...3 years or so. It was great, would like to get back into it but alas dont have the time or money. Played piano for 6 years or so, again, not the time or money to do that either.

Yeah, I had to play tenor in Jazz band. It's basically the same, so I'm thinking about getting one of those.

Of course, I really wanted to play soprano sax, but they wouldn't let me.

I've been playing Alto Sax for 10 years. At around 6 years I got myself a Selmer Super Action 80 Series II. Arguably the best horn money can buy and I love it. The action is perfect and the tone is incredible. Mmmm hand made in France...

Used to play alto way back in the day, then I switched to trumpet. It weighed less and was easier to carry around. That was 10+ years ago.

Ah, well, I can't really afford anything like that.

I'm looking at like $800 max. For soprano saxes, I'm eyeing this one.

I do live 1 house down from a music store, but they're pretty expensive.

Heh, well if you're gonna go with a soprano, please just don't end up like Kenny G. Anything but Kenny G.

I have a friend who was the best alto sax player to ever come out of our state, went to NY on a full ride at a prestigious jazz school and he's about to release a CD. He makes about 500 bucks a week playing on about 5 hours playing. He's been practicing 4 hours a day since he was like 8 though....

So, I guess he's so sick of jazz that he's going to go into law school now...

Well, I'll be able to practice everyday since I can play it at work when I'm not busy. I can't play it at home though, as I live in an apartment.

Well, I still remember all of the keys, so that shouldn't be very difficult. My biggest problem is that I forgot how to read music o) and my lips aren't going to be as strong as they were of course.

This time I need to learn how to tounge. I spent 5 years faking it...

I play a Mark VI alto - Paris Edition - I don't have any specific recommendations on a horn. What I recommend is to get someone thats fairly good at the sax to help you pick one out. Bring a tuner to the shop, and have him test the horn to see if it plays fairly well in tune. Other than that, pick the one that sounds the best, and feels the best to you...not much more to it.

Heh, maybe we could start an ATOT band . . . we could record our sections of a song and e-mail each other, filling the gap . . ..

My friend used to play that horn, I don't think it was a Paris edition though.

I'll probably have to buy used, and then see if I want to get a better one. The problem is that if I for some reason become unable to play at work, I'll have no where to play.

i had a Selmer Mark VI alto that i played in HS & college.
it's a really great horn if you can find & afford one.

unfortunately, adult responsibilities took away all free
time to practice/play & i sold it a couple of years ago.

I was a Baritone Sax playerfor 8 years. Worst choice ever, at least for marching band.
I even used it in the Rose Parade!
But Jazz band was where it was at for the Barisax.

Actually, the Series III SA80 is the best horn. I might get one soon, I have a crappy student Yamaha right now...
