Is it worth replacing using the kits online rather than going to Apple - if so, any recommndations on which kit to get?

While I never did the 6+, I replaced my own iPhone 6 screen and while there were a lot of little things to be careful about, it was pretty damn easy. It probably took me 45 minutes total.

This was the one I ordered:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073N6T92B/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It came with all of the tools necessary too.

If you do get one, I'd get one that costs like $10-$15 more with good reviews over the ones that are a bit cheaper with mediocre reviews. If you read the cheaper reviews, those appear to have some where the screen has issues after installation. After doing all of the work, I'd hate for stuff to not work.

Cheers. That's a lot cheaper than going to Apple. I'll have a dig around amazon.

Also if you're curious about the steps, here's the steps for the iPhone 6 replacement screen:

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+6+Front+Panel+Assembly+Replacement/29339

I replaced my battery like a month or so before, and then a week before I ordered the iPhone X, my wife slapped my phone out of my hand and it must have landed freakishly and just completely shattered. But I didn't want a cracked screen even for a short period of time so I got a replacement.

With the new battery and new screen my phone felt brand new.

EDIT:

Here's the 6+ directions. Looks pretty much identical (as expected) but their time estimate is a lot longer, not sure why.

I replaced mine professionally, but the screen they used was some cheap LCD. It works, but not great.

Can't they use the same screen and just replace the front glass?

I've done a couple for my grandsons. There are some Youtube videos that do a good job of showing you how.

I attempted a 7s and it wouldn't power on anymore afterwards, even with the old cracked screen. Not sure what happened, but I'd advise taking it somewhere with insurance to replace it if it fries.

Replaced an s7 edge screen. Easy enough but shortly after replacement the new screen had a green line through it. Sent it back and threw the phone in the trash.

The replacement screens sold right now really are crap, made of plastic, inferior pixel density, unreliable. I'd just get a replacement phone and remember to get a case that doesn't allow for damage.

The work really isn't that hard though, if the replacement screen wasn't of such poor quality I'd of been happy with it.

I didn't use any parts from ifixit, just their instructions, just fyi. Again just read reviews on amazon and don't get one that is $10 or $15 cheaper but has worse reviews and you should be fine.
