When is the American public going to realize that China is already trying to kill Americans...through dangerous products...like poisonous baby food and dog food, defective toys, lead paint, and now...defective drywall.

Story on CNN front page.

Anyone here been affected by this drywall?

I think there needs to be an embargo on China-made products until they improve their quality/testing

saying "rotten chinese" drywall is pretty redundant.
"chinese" would have sufficed

Yeah, free trade benefits everyone...

Can't say I've ever had a problem with drywall at all. IIRC, we still have a few plants here in the US that supply drywall on a regional basis...

When you're willing to pay more for quality, there will be more quality.

No one is forcing these Chinese companies to quote prices that they aren't able to deliver on without using poisonous filler materials. Don't blame the people who are deceived into buying an unsafe product.

Just because you pay more doesn't mean that you are getting your moneys worth. Many don't have a choice when building a home simply because they cannot verify where their contractors source their materials. The average person wouldn't even know that there is a difference, must less to request that a higher quality be used.

There was a big reason we did no trade with China until the mid 70's.

About time we go back to that model. One after another they are showing they are willing to endanger us by offering products at an excellent price that simply are poisonous.

part of the problem is that americans feel entitled to be able to drive a bmw home to their 60" tv while slinging burgers.

here, in oregon, minimum wage is $8.40 and i know quite a few unskilled high school/college age people that don't want to work for "just" minimum wage.

In the case of drywall this can't be done but I think it should be up to the US companies to do the testing.

I mean if you hire someone to do work for you and they do a shitty job is it their fault or yours because ultimately the vast majority of these products are branded by US companies.

shopping solely on price is equally so. The cheapest could be the best product.

If you hire someone to do work for you and they do a shitty job, it's definitely their fault.

The problem is, how do we know what to test for, and is it even feasible to test for all of the stupid shit they put in their products?

At least the Chinese government punishes these people who intentionally put poison in their products. I guess if there's on thing you can count on from an oppressive government, it's severe punishment for people who make their country look bad.

I wasn't talking specifically about the drywall, but about the idea of embargoing all Chinese made products.
In this case with drywall it's a bit of an exception because usually it's import from elsewhere according to the article, so the Chinese were a last resort and it probably wasn't for cost purposes as much, but when it comes to other products people complain about, that's more related to wanting to do things cheaply.

Lets say I hire you to paint my house.

If you do a shitty job than you aren't getting paid until its painted correctly. Its my job to make sure everything is done as quoted before you get paid in full.

Lets say they forgot to paint a room (glaring error) but I just ok'ed it and paid.

Later I complain. I'm fucked now.

US company

Outsource product -> Chinese company builds product -> US company puts their logo on it and sells it.

I think the company that hires them should be the ones that checks the quality.

when it comes to building supplies such as drywall the cheapest is not going to be best. no question on it. unless the company is trying to go out of business anyway.

there is a reason why this drywall is $4 and most is around $8

I think we have some in our house. I am always noticing that after we eat, everyone in the house gets hungry within 30 minutes.
