I suffer from moderate depression and anxiety. I currently take Xanax to alleviate my anxiety but was wondering if anyone here has friends, family, or takes St. John's Wort themselves.

I've tried Paxil, Zoloft, and another anti-depressant in the past and hated the side effects.

Researching St. John's Wort, it seems to have great reviews with few side effects if any.

Seems to work as well as prescription anti-depressants, but i'd love to hear some feedback from someone real who has tried it.

Thanks!!

Omega 3 fish oil helped my anxiety. Try it on an empty stomach and let me know if it works for you too.

Try diet and exercise according to Harvard medical studies this is the most effective way.

If SJW helps people, it usually wears off in 4-6 weeks. But everyone is different.

In addition to taking a good b multivitamin, something different to try that helps some people is l-methylfolate, which you can buy on Amazon.

I tried SJW for anxiety/depression but it wasn't doing anything. I tried L-theanine and that stuff is great for anxiety. Not sure if it will help with depression. A lot of my depression was just me being affected by anxiety.

A great treatment modality that doesnt involve taking any medications whatsoever would be CBT, but it could take longer than a pill to work. In fact, if you've grown accustomed to using the xanax for anxiety then it could be ridiculously hard to pry your brain away from it given the positive reinforcement scheduling of anxiety disorders treated with multiple doses of short acting high potency benzodiazepine like xanax.

From what Ive heard, there are some in the field who think that benzodiazepines only mask the problem by globally depressing brain activity and (without putting your feet to the fire like what would happen in CBT) prevent full top-down modulation by the higher logic parts of your frontal lobe. Of course thats all being debated now and remains to be proven, but still an interesting thought.

Make sure you talk to your pharmacist before starting St Johns Wart if you do, it interacts with a lot of medications.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. At my last physical, my doctor did tell me that i was Vitamin D3 deficient. I've been taking a mutivitamin every other day that has 1000 iu of D3 but maybe that isn't enough.

He told me that i should be taking 2000-4000 iu of D3 daily. Does that really make that big of an impact on mood and/or anxiety?

There's a reason people get depressed during winter, and that's because you get a lot less UV rays from the sun which help your body produce vitamin D naturally. If you're already low it could affect you pretty severely. Now that we're nearing spring, try and get outside some more as it gets warm to help that out on top of any supplements.

Recommended safe dose is 4000iu you should be taking at least that and remember D3 not D should work in couple day. You might be sensitive to lack of sun. D3 sure helps and has many other benefits.

I highly recommend you taper off of xanax and then totally quit it. Its going to absolutely suck but you have to. The drug is terrible.. Ive been off of it for 3 months now and the first few weeks were hell. The anxiety from the withdrawls is 10 times worse then what you were trying to cover up but the xanax will never solve the issue at hand.. it just numbs you and continues to fuck your brain chemistry up.. requiring you to constantly increase doses.

Still I suffer from depression but im taking D3 to help with it and making other life changes like exercise and moving out of this shit hole.

lmao.. I'd imagine a surefire cure for depression for a Detroit resident is to move out of Detroit

What works for me is intense physical activity. When I get stressed, anxious, or mildly depressed I just hit the gym extra hard.

http://healthscience.org/index.php?...update-vit-d2-vs-d3-a-how-much-sun&Itemid=198
Q: How much vitamin D does a person get from exposure to the sun?

Dr Holick: We did a study that showed that if you expose a person in a bathing suit to what we call 1 minimal erythemal dose, which is a light pinkness to the skin 24 hours after sun exposure, it’s equivalent to taking between 15 000 and 20 000 IU of vitamin D 3. For a white adult, that would be equivalent to being exposed to sunlight in June at noon for about 10-15 minutes on a Cape Cod beach. Your body has a huge capacity to make vitamin D. What’s interesting is that the sunlight destroys any excess vitamin D that your body makes, so you could never become vitamin D intoxicated from sun exposure
