There's a guy in our IT department who is also a software developer on the side. He has one of these devices and he said it's like having a 100' screen in front of you. For only $350 I think it's a toy I'd be interested in. It would also be good for those of us working in the financial industry since we have to look at multiple screens daily. He said Bloomberg is working on an app for this device. the downside appears to be that it's not wireless (HDMI only, I believe).

Anyone here used it? Are the evangelists right?

When is that supposed to come out? Also, do you know the difference between the developer and consumer kits?

I do not know but they are just know sending out the second developer kit which is supposed to be a big improvement over the first and the consumer is supposed to be even better. There was a big uproar when FB bought them but I read an interview with the founder of Oculus and he said that they will run as their own company but now they will have much more money to spend on R&D and will produce a better unit in a quicker amount of time. I hope that is true

Looks pretty cool. I run a drafting CAD department and I could see this eventually replacing the dual monitor setups we run today. Your screen real estate would be massive. $500 for unit wouldn't be all that bad either. Maybe I can get the R & D group to buy us one to play with.

It has half the "real estate" as a basic 1080p monitor.

I am sure that what you typed is true, it's really what Facebook will put in that is worrisome. Facebook's business is 100% data mining, they make their money by knowing everything about you. I'm curious as to what they think they can get out of Oculus to justify the money spent to buy them.

the resolution is kinda crappy for viewing dense information, but you can move your head around to access a 360 degree virtual space. not sure how ergonomics that would be though.

The next version is expected to have 2 1080p screens compared to the lower res of the first model.

I keep thinking of the virtual boy every time I see this.

Someone needs to mod the case of that to fit around this.

Yeah I have tried it. It is OK. Wait for higher resolution versions as the current one has a terrible resolution and large pixels are unpleasing to eyes.

Seems like the optics do some major stretching on the outer pixels. Would be cool if they could get displays with custom pixel size and brightness.

You mean Facebook Glasses™? Haven't tried them; maybe once they release the Candy Crush app for it.

The screens are so close to your face that it doesn't matter how small the pixels are. The image is either out of focus or irritatingly blocky. May as well be playing fucking minecraft in 3D.

It covered enough of my FOV that it was sufficient to generate motion cues. I literally felt like I was moving when viewing one of them. It's like when you're stopped next to a huge truck and when that truck moves forward, it feels like you're moving backwards even though you're stationary. The sense of motion is largely visual.

The screendoor effect on the first gen was definitely the worst thing about it though. Second version should be vastly better at 1080p. I can't wait for them to fit a 4K screen on it.

I don't think you'd want that glued to your face all day. Probably not good for your eyes either.

Waiting for the fleshlight bundle edition.

Of course there will be. Rule 35 of the internet. If no porn is found at the moment, it will be made. There already exists the fleshlight iPad dock. It's a real thing, go look it up. What has been seen cannot be unseen.

I think they already made a porn game for it.
