anyone here using litestep or any other program like it?

I was wondering if installing and using this windows shell replament will affect how is your windows running? I'm running w2k --just looking arround for a program that can change how my windows look and feel. Was wondering if there is any expert on this subject here.

I used lightstep a little last summer -- my impression was that it was pretty stable, and was pretty easy to install. Using it rather than explorer took a little pressure off the P133-32MB I was using.

At the time it was fairly difficult to customize your desktop beyond simply switching themes. That might have changed by now.

It was definitely very cool, and seemed to have a lot of potential. That was 10 months ago.

Huh? AFAIK, Litestep can't replace Win2k's shell. It just runs on top but doesn't take over completely, so there's no preformance benefit like on Win98. So are you just running it for looks?

Kadesh: Litestep can replace your shell in Win2k. I've tried it. Systemtray icons were a bit screwy, but the shell in general worked fine. I kinda miss the older versions of litestep though. When I first tryed it about 2 (maybe 3?) years ago the interface was much better than the current incarnations.

BTW anime, if you want a REALLY neat system you can show off to your friends, grab X-Win32 and Cygwin. Then compile Xfree86 under Cygwin for the libraries. Then compile Windowmaker. Start X-win32 fullscreen, then startup windowmaker. TADA!!!! you REALLY look like you're using a Unix box. That's what I use when I need to do some programming but I'm downloading something so I can't reboot into Linux.

I use litstep now, and I am so caught up in it that I made my own theme. I will provide screenshots soon as I get home from work. It is much much easier to use now and much mroe stable. Win2k is just as compatible with it as Win98 is. Sometiems it uses less memory than win98. But I love litestep and wouldnt think of using any other shell.
And contrary to what Kadesh said, it does take over the shell of Win2k and I have a friend that made his own theme also - search litestep.net for frostbyte- and he uses win2k.
