err, there are tons of non kid animes. In fact I would say most are not.

Obviously. But this would be like an innocent looking animation like Ponyo only to see a main character get ruthlessly decapitated with their headless corpse crashing to the ground without warning part way through. It looks like a kids anime the first two episodes, then goes straight to hell. That's in stark contrast to something like ghost in the shell that you pretty much know right from the start is an anime aimed at adults.

I had serious doubts about Puella Magi Madoka, but gave it a try due to your suggestion. The first two episodes play out like an episode of Sailor Moon. Then episode 3 happened and it was like WTF I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID THAT.

This is either not a kids show, or Japan has VERY different standards on what constitutes a kids show compared to America. It's so dark and so depressing that it's colorful bright animation bellies it's true nature. I just can't look away.

Yeah, I don't think it's exactly supposed to be a kids show. I'll often check MyAnimeList for a quick rundown on rating and what type of offending material, although in this case the violence itself wasn't too graphic (IIRC ultimately you just saw a body twitch, drops of blood, and heard the noises of

). I mean, I rewatched the first Sailor Moon episode somewhat recently and was surprised that when she does her finishing energy blast thing against the first villain, you can actually see the villain's face peel away into shreds of flesh and disintegrate. It's just shocking when you kill a

Seeing a

girls decapitated corpse drop and clunk onto the ground was a shocker

only because of how left of field it felt in the contrast of the bright and colorful and kid like look and appearance the first two episodes were, but I'm hooked. I've watched it all now, but am curious. When is the movie coming out on video? No theater I can imagine in the US would show an anime movie, much less with english subtitles.

I still vote Giant Robo as best music and best dubbing. One of the few I can count on 1 hand where the English voice acting is actually superior and not ear bleeding horrible.
